Career and Technical Education FAQ's
What is CTE?
CTE stands for Career and Technical Education. Multiple electives are offered through CTE.
What is the difference between a Pathway and a Program of Study?
A Pathway is the large grouping of similar career fields while a Program of Study is a specific group of courses that are taken in sequence within the pathway. For example the Transportation Pathway has multiple Programs of Study: Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair AND Automotive Collision Repair. Each Program of Study has 4 levels of classes although students don't need to take them all. If a student takes the first two classes in a sequence they are considered a Program of Study Concentrator and is the first step towards receiving getting CTE Honors (see the above flyer to learn more about CTE Honors and Performance Based Assessments)
Can Freshmen take CTE classes?
Yes 6 of the 8 core/foundation classes are open to freshmen: Foundations of Cultural Media, Foundations of Engineering, Foundations of Construction, Foundations of Automotive Maintenance, Foundations of Agriculture, and Foundations of Culinary. Foundations of Business and Foundations of Health Service are open starting at 10th grade.
Why are some introduction courses called "Core" and some called "Foundations"?
The State of Hawaii is transitioning to a new set of Career Pathways and Programs of Study. This is happening over 3 years. The pathways that have transitioned are the IET, Business, Health, and Natural Resources and the introduction level is called the "Foundation" course. Arts and Communication and Public Human Services will transition in SY 23-24 so those courses are still called "Cores" for the next school year. You can review the list of programs of studies that Kekaulike offers here.
Is STEM an after school program like at Kalama?
No, it is an elective year course during the school day. Students can start freshmen year and continue it for 4 years if they want to. Freshmen take Introduction to STEM Service Learning.
