WHAT IS AVID AT KING KEKAULIKE HIGH SCHOOL?
AVID [Advancement Via Individual Determination] is an elective class programmed into the regular school day. AVID is a stepping stone to prepare students to become competitive for four-year colleges and universities, and to provide support for academic courses, including honors and AP classes.

WHAT DO STUDENTS DO IN THE AVID ELECTIVE CLASS?
AVID includes the following:
Cornell Notes - students will work up to taking notes in at least three classes
Notebook organization, calendars, assignment records
Writing component, often in conjunction with school writing projects
Higher level questioning skills
Collaborative tutorial support
Vocabulary related to core subjects as well as SAT vocabulary
Study skills
Test-taking strategies
Career and college exploration and related vocabulary
Socratic Seminars
Guest speakers from the business, professional, and educational community
In addition, AVID teachers communicate with parents and teachers of AVID student programs.
Counselors will work on an in-depth four-year plan with each student.
WHAT DOES THE AVID STUDENT LOOK LIKE?
Below is the criteria we look at when selecting students:
2.5 - 3.5 GPA
"B" or "C" students who should be "A" or "B" students
average to high SBA scores and/or benchmarks
good study habits
good attendance record
willing to enroll in honors and AP classes
first in family to attend college
have desire and determination to succeed
willing to get additional guidance through weekly tutorials
willing to improve organizational skills, study skills, note-taking skills, and test-taking skills
works well with peers, teachers, and staff members
