Priority Instructional Content FOr Mathematics

Grade Levels: K-8, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II

The Priority Instructional Content for Mathematics are designed by the Student Achievement Partners (Achieve the Core). The Hawaii Department of Education Office of Curriculum & Instructional Design (OCID) Mathematics Team created videos and guides to help teachers use the Priority Instructional Content when planning their lessons.

The Hawaii Dept. of Education approves and highly recommends teachers use the Priority Instructional Content as a guide to plan and prioritize the Common Core Standards and mathematical content. These resources can help you plan efficiently and save time and energy by prioritizing the mathematics content for optimal learning.

Note: The 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 Priority Instructional Content for Mathematics are the same.

The 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice by Common Core are the foundation for mathematical thinking and practice for students. It helps teachers approach teaching in a way that builds students' conceptual and advanced mathematical thinking and understanding. Teachers can use it as a guide to create an engaging and complex learning experience that can be applied to everyday life.

Achieve the COre Resources

Build your students mathematical foundation, identify gaps, and link major topics through understanding the progression of mathematical concepts and connections of the Common Core State Standards within and across grade levels.

Strategically focus on the major work of each grade so students can build a solid foundation and conceptual understanding, efficient procedural skills and fluency, and the ability to apply the math inside and outside of the classroom.

The Math Shifts is a framework that describes how the Common Core standards and college-and-ready standards raise expectations across instruction, tasks, and assessment, as well as better prepare students for opportunities after high school. The main areas

1. Focus strongly where the standards focus.

2. Coherence: Think across grades and link to major topics within grades.

3. Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity.

These lessons, tasks, and assessments highlight and align to the Math Shifts and standards in everyday instruction. The content and resources are organized by grade level or high school mathematics course.
