STEM Day at KCIS Ntinda 2 site.
The Year 2 learners embarked on an exciting scientific journey to address a real-life problem using materials available to them. Drawing on their knowledge of materials and their properties, the students devised a plan to assist a village facing a particular challenge.
Scenario
A village has sent a message asking for help. Following an earthquake, the village has been flooded, and there are many things they need help with.
These may include:
• Making boats to rescue people stuck in their houses
• Creating flare rockets
• Ensuring their drinking water is clean
• Building earthquake-resistant buildings and towers to replace the ones lost
• Building a hand-turned winch to recover items from under the water
• Finding a way to remove the oil slicks from the water
The village is asking Year 2 students to help them in these tasks, or any others they think would be helpful in this situation.
By integrating their skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), the learners worked collaboratively to develop a helpful product. They explored various materials, conducted experiments, and engaged in critical thinking to design a solution tailored to the village's needs.
Through this hands-on experience, the students not only enhanced their understanding of STEM concepts but also contributed positively to their community, showcasing the power of innovation and teamwork.
Well done, Samantha, Anir, Riva, Tiffany, Takumi, Lexy, Hinano, Harel, and Isaiah for being great KISU ambassadors.

As part of our nonfiction unit in English, the children have been exploring labels and captions and their role in enhancing information and facts. Excited, they stepped outside their classroom with a mission in mind, sticky notes in hand, and curiosity in their eyes, ready to label everything in their outdoor space. By the end of this activity, the entire KS1 playground was filled with labels and captivating captions.
Through this activity, the children understood the power of words and learnt to enhance their captions by adding adjectives. They became more expressive, realising how each word has importance as they added descriptive language—all while having fun and engaging meaningfully with their surroundings.
Who knows what they’ll label next? The possibilities are as limitless as their imaginations!

In Year 1MN students, transform the classroom into a magical reading nook! The children delved into a variety of books, sparking their imagination.
The students were encouraged to explore different genres that include fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, fostering a love for learning. They shared their favourite characters, discussed some problems in the story, and asked insightful questions about the stories they were exploring. The classroom became a vibrant space for critical thinking, creativity, and communication. The experience of reading together in Year 1MN created a strong sense of community and a shared love for learning. One particularly memorable activity was the "Book Swap," where students could trade books with their classmates, discovering new titles and sharing their recommendations on what was the most exciting part of the storybook. Keep it up!
