How Can I Practice Shared Reading
Choosing the Right Book:
One of the elements of the shared reading approach, is to read the book repeatedly over a period of days. Each day, something new is taught from that book, and by the end of the week, children know and love that book intimately.Â

Weekly Suggested Routine!
Monday - Comprehension
Look closely at the front and back cover.
Ask your child, what do you see, think, or wonder about the book.
Flip through the pages and look at the illustrations.
Tuesday - Story Elements
Read the book to your child.
Ask questions:
Who are the characters?
Where does the story take place? What illustrations helped you figure out the setting?
Wednesday - Vocabulary and Print Awareness
Read the same story to your child. [second read]
Look through the book and find vocabulary words.
Rhyming words
Words they can sound out
Words they may not know - help them learn the word and use the text to help them understand the meaning of the word
Thursday - Text Structure
Read the same story to your child. [third read]
Ask your child if there are any patterns in the story. Are there any parts that repeat itself.
Friday - Read together
Have your child read the book with you or by themselves!
