The Contract for Safety Plan is put in place for students who are struggling with depression, anger, or other emotions and thoughts that put them in crisis situations. In the event that a Contract for Safety is necessary, the student works with the School Counselor to determine what specific actions can be taken to help improve emotions or thoughts that might lead to harming behaviors. The types of actions are split into five categories:
Talking to someone they feel comfortable with
Using positive coping skills
Remind themselves of positive things about themselves
Remind themselves of their goals in life
Call their counselor or therapist
The student will fill in each part of the safety contract with people and actions that are specific to them. If the student is struggling with positive coping skills or positive self-talk statements, the counselor will give them the coping skills sheet and positive self-talk list of phrases to choose from. *All safety plans are kept confidentially by the School Counselor and copies are provided to parents/guardians. Students who contract for a safety plan are expected to keep it with them at all times.*
