Kinvara in the Past

Áitbheo place based learning project

5th Class

St Joseph's NS, Kinvara

Explore Kinvara in the past alongside the fifth class pupils of St Joseph's National School.

This year both fifth classes completed a nine week Áitbheo project with Mary and Gráinne from Burrenbeo Trust. During this time pupils explored their locality in detail. They learned so much about the local landscape, flora, fauna, culture and community both now and in the past.

As a follow up to the programme, the children decided upon an area they would like to explore in further detail. They were particularly enthralled by the history of the area and wished to examine various aspects of it in further detail.

Our research has been mainly based upon, and inspired by, the photographs taken by Robert Creswell in the 1950s and the book Kinvara - A Seaport Town on Galway Bay published by Tíreolas and we wish to acknowledge the wealth of historical evidence both have provided to us.

We also interviewed people who lived in the locality or had a particular interest in the area. We would like to sincerely thank Nora Corless, Kathy Tannian, Michael Brogan, Paul Gunning, Margaret Droney, Finola Murphy, Marie Griffin and Catherine Kilkelly for their most valuable input.
