Trash Pickup 2022
Trash Pickup 2022
the event
On April 22, 2022, almost 100% of North Star's student body volunteered to clean up our campus, leaving it trash-free. This date is Earth Day, which is a yearly celebration of our planet and its conservation.

our impact
Over just 45 minutes, North Star students picked up:
80.7 TOTAL POUNDS OF TRASH!
This is a really large amount, and we should all be proud of ourselves!! Through this trash pickup, NSA students learned a lot about their impact on the world around them, and also had a lot of fun being outside.
Though we can be proud, this is actually only about 1/3 of the waste that we produce each day. The trash that we picked up filled approximately 1 large trash can, but our janitor Rocco said that he has to empty 2 additional trash cans each day. Even if this trash is not being littered, we should still think about how much we produce in just one day, and should consider bringing reusable containers and water bottles to school.
The winners
Even though everyone worked very hard and did a really good job, certain classes picked up more trash than others and deserve recognition. These classes are:
1. ALL SPORTS - 21.6 pounds
The All Sports enrichment picked up an impressive 21.6 pounds of trash, putting them in first place and as the receivers of our Trash Pickup prize!
2. MAKERSPACE 104 - 15 pounds
The MakerSpace 104 enrichment picked up trash in the parking lot in front of Ms. Baltay/Mrs. Vance's classrooms, an area that has caused many issues with littering in the past.
3. THE ZEN OF DRAWING - 7.2 pounds
And in third place, The Zen of Drawing enrichment did an amazing job picking up 7.2 pounds of trash on our campus!
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
A special shout out to The Trojan War Cycle enrichment who focused on picking up micro plastics, some of the most harmful forms of litter!
what we learned
By picking up trash, North Star students learned about our impact on the school campus and the environment around us. We learned that putting in just a small effort to pick up trash can change our campus dramatically!
