Determine the field of research you are interested in (see the field list on Home > About Us). Use "diamond nine" method to decide a choice based on your preference.
write 9 fields of research that you are interested in, each on a piece of paper
arrange the 9 pieces of paper into the diamond formation (see Figure 1) randomly
move the piece upwards if you think it's the field that you like better
the field that sits on the top of the diamond is the field you like the best, so choose it for the next step.
Find a problem in your chosen field of research. Spot the difficulties in life related to that field.
think of your daily activities
observe your families and neighbourhood activities
read and watch news
talk to local people
talk to experts
talk to your teacher
If the competition you have in mind has a certain theme, choose a problem relevant to it.
If you have some problems you want to work on and it's hard for you to choose, use the "diamond nine" method again, but consider these aspects:
Choose a local problem that also happens worldwide. Check UN SDGs to see the main concern of the global world nowadays (Figure 2).
Choose a solution idea that is feasible to be produced and tested within 3-6 months. Otherwise, you must plan to submit your project for next year's events.
Research for existing solutions, find their weaknesses, find alternatives

Originality will be examined through the presentation of the project, either at the booth or in a closed judging session, while novelty can be examined through a literature check.
The idea is not a product of plagiarism. The students can explain how they get to the idea.
The projects has new elements compared to prior or similar research, and that new element is interesting and creative.
Around 12 words long or less
Mentioning the idea and the problem being solved
If the rule allows, include the name of the product. Choose an eye-catchy and ear-catchy name that relates to the idea.
Maximum 500 words
It describes the problem: the cause, the effect, the urgency
It describes the solution: the reasoning, the usefulness, the feasibility, the future prospects
It describes the existing solutions and compares it with your idea. State why your idea is superior.
They are the scientific problems of your research. They are not the description of the problems you discuss in the background.
They are stated in interrogative sentences.
They list the questions you want to answer through the project, by the experiments you will conduct.
They are related to the research problem, but stated in declarative sentences to show your intention.
The research aims are as many points as research problems.
