Social studies in second grade focuses on people who make a difference. This includes a study of individual action and character, as well as historical figures and contemporary individuals. Second graders learn about United States government institutions and some basic economic concepts, such as producers, consumers, supply, and demand.
The students also study times past in our Then and Now Unit. Through storytelling, examination of artifacts from the past, and learning about family traditions from elder interviews, we focus on change over time. Our driving question is: "How can we share with others how our world has changed over time?" This unit culminates in a Then and Now Celebration, where our students will share their learning with two invited guests at a multicultural luncheon.
