Second graders read a wide range of grade-level appropriate material, both fiction and non-fiction. They continue to work on decoding words and reading aloud fluently with appropriate expression. In second grade, students learn the skills and strategies needed for a deeper understanding of the texts they read. They analyze the structural elements of narrative and nonfiction text. Students compare and contrast versions of stories from different cultures or by different authors.
Second Graders retell and summarize stories, fables, and folktales and learn to determine the main message and the author’s purpose. They also describe characters and how characters respond to events and challenges.
Second Graders ask and answer questions about a text, support their answers with evidence from the text, make connections between the text and other stories or reading materials, themselves, and the world around them.
