In second grade, the emphasis is on place value and number relationships in addition and subtraction, working our way up to two and three digit operations. By the end of second grade, students are expected to be fluent in their addition and subtraction facts up to 20.
Second graders become familiar with units of measure and measurement tools, read and interpret bar graphs, tell time to five minute intervals, and identify and describe solid geometric shapes and plane shapes. Second graders also work with money and are introduced to the foundations of multiplication.
The Second grade curriculum follows the Eureka Math units of study:
Sums and Differences to 100
Addition and Subtraction of Length Units
Place Value, Counting, and Comparison of Numbers to 1,000
Addition and Subtraction Within 200 with Word Problems
Foundations of Multiplication and Division
Problem Solving with Length, Money, and Data
Time, Shapes, and Fractions as Equal Parts of Shapes
Second graders blend their knowledge of these content areas with the ability to apply that knowledge to solve problems, communicate math ideas, justify solutions, model math concepts, and reason to make sense of mathematics. These math practices standards are a key component of our math program as well.
