Let's work together to keep our school community healthy! A few simple habits make a big difference.
When to stay home: Please keep your child home if they have a fever (>100°F) or diarrhea. Students should be symptom free for 24 hours without medication before returning.
Hand hygiene: Remind your child to wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating and after using the restroom.
Cough etiquette: encourage sneezing and coughing into tissues or the elbow, but not hands.
Avoid sharing personal items like drinks, food, and unwashed utensils.
Get plenty of rest and good nutrition.

On Thursday, March 12th, 5th and 6th grade students will be watching the puberty videos linked below.
Permission forms have been sent out soon by your student’s homeroom teacher. These forms are due by March 6th and should be turned into the student's Flex teacher if you choose for your student to watch the video.
If you choose for your student to opt out of watching the video, they will be asked to go to the library during this time.

COUNSELING NEWS
On March 6th, Alliance for Children will be returning to teach Teen Matters Lesson 2 in 6th Grade and P. S. It’s My Body in 5th grade. These are the lessons that address Senate Bill 9’s requirement that all Texas schools teach about the recognition and prevention of child abuse. Texas further requires that parents and guardians opt-in their students to attend this lesson. In Keller, this opt-in is obtained during the beginning of the year enrollment process and is separate from the opt-out of counseling lessons that was also provided during that process. On February 20th, families of students not optioned into this program received a notification of their choice and a reminder their child will not receive the lesson. If you are unsure of your choice please check your email and email and spam folder to see if you are optioned out. More about the lessons can be found here. As the date approaches, more resources might be shared with us to share with you. Please keep an eye on school communications if you would like more information.

5th Grade Math information
Dear Families,
In May 2023, SB 2124 – Advanced Mathematics Instruction went into effect. This law ensures that students have access to a middle school mathematics program designed to prepare them for Algebra I in 8th grade and increase opportunities for advanced math in high school.
To help you understand SB 2124, the timeline for the KISD Local Measure, and how assessments will be administered, we’ve created a short parent-friendly video.

Future 7th Grader Registration information
March 2-6th: Parent portal is open to view and verify selected courses.
· March 13th: Last day for parents/students to request changes to their selection in writing to their counselor.
· February 13- March 13th Parents, please use this request link to request changes. Counselors will not be able to respond to emails about changing course requests. Use the request link provided to communicate that.
Course selections are final on March 13. This is a KISD district deadline, so we will not be able to honor course change requests after March 13. Course changes will also not be considered at the beginning of the 2026-27 school year. Honoring this deadline is important, because your child’s course choices help determine how many sections of courses are necessary, the hiring of staff to fill those teaching positions, and if a course might be cancelled due to lack of student interest.

Author Visit - March 6th
Jasmine Warga says her "presentations include a power-point presentation that will give students some general information about my childhood and teen years, how I got into writing, the publishing process, and my books. I love getting the chance to talk about the power of stories, and encouraging all students to find and use their voices. I also do a Q&A, which gives the students a chance to ask more about the topics that interest them the most."

Our campus will be closed to visitors during STAAR testing. To help ensure a quiet and secure testing environment, please note the following:
Lunches: Students may bring their own lunch from home or purchase a sack lunch from the cafeteria.
No Deliveries: No lunch or item drop‑offs will be allowed until all students have completed testing for the day.
Appointments: Please be mindful of testing dates when scheduling appointments.
If a student leaves during a test, they will not be allowed to continue the exam when they return.
Thank you for your support in helping our students have a successful testing experience!
Special Sack Lunch Days
Occasionally throughout the year, we have special events that require our cafeteria to offer sack lunches only during the lunch period. Sack lunches will be available from the cafeteria for both 5th and 6th grade on the following dates:

Snack cart donations
“PTA aims to keep snack carts full all year long for teachers and staff. Please consider grabbing an item or two off this Amazon wishlist. Thank you for donating!”
Do NOT send food that contains or may contain peanuts or tree-nuts to be eaten as a snack in the classroom. Snacks that do not contain nuts as an ingredient but say they may have been processed in a facility that has peanuts/tree-nuts will still be allowed as a snack.
Birthday parties are a special time for children, and we want to celebrate your child. If you want to send something fun to celebrate, we are requesting that you send non-food items (bubbles, pencils, stickers, etc...). Please do not send a treat containing peanuts/tree-nuts. Any treat brought into the classroom to be consumed by other students MUST be store bought with the ingredient labels attached.

We have students/staff with different allergy needs - some very severe. A severe allergy is an allergy that may cause an anaphylactice reaction. A child with a serious food allergy can suffer a reaction merely by touching an allergy containing food.
STUDENT ARRIVALS
Thank you for dropping off your student(s) in the student loop using Phillips Dr. between 7:15 am and 7:45 am at Door #6. If it is past 7:45 your student will need to be dropped off in the front office to obtain a tardy pass for class.
The front entrance, Door #1, of the school is reserved for carpooling students of 3 or more who attend BCI. We reserve the front entrance also for SPED buses and those who are on crutches or in wheelchairs.
As a reminder, for the safety of our students and staff, no cell phone use is allowed, the speed limit is 10 mph on school property, and 20 mph in School Zones.
STUDENT DISMISSAL
Student dismissal will have a staggered release. Our BUS riders and WALKERS will be leaving their classrooms at 3:13 PM. In years past, over 70% of our students rode a bus for our PM routes, so, as you can imagine, we will have a lot of students leaving at this time. There is not a designated area where walkers are picked up. Please communicate with your student where you will be each day so that your walker will know which crosswalk to use. We have crosswalks on the south side of campus that cross Bear Creek Parkway and another that crosses over Phillips Drive on the north side of campus. If you are parking your vehicle in our neighborhoods around us, please be respectful by not blocking driveways, walking on lawns, or speeding. We are surrounded by a sweet community and a beautiful park, so we want to make sure we take care of these areas.
At 3:15, our CAR RIDERS will be dismissed. We do not call out names. Students are instructed to watch as the cars pull up to see where they would need to use the crosswalk, if needed. We will have many adults out to help encourage our students to keep watching for you as you safely drive around the loop. Remember to stay off your cell phone in our loop for safety reasons.
For the first week or so of school, please continue to communicate with your student how they will be getting home. i.e. which bus to get on, which location to walk home, who will be picking them up etc. Some times students get very nervous during this new transition and we want to ensure you student gets home safely and on time.
DRESS CODE

Our students have been GREAT with following our cell phone expectations this year! First - a cell phone is NOT a needed supply. :) By 7:45 AM, cell phones should be turned off and placed in the student's locker. If a student needs to use the phone, we have passes ready for students to come up to the office to use a campus phone. At the end of the day, students are able to access their cell phones when they are outside of the building.
