Answers to Why?
Why drop off lunch 10-15 mins before dismissed for lunch?
We can find student to let them know, especially if it is a surprise! That way, the student can enjoy his/her full lunch time.
Why should you pick up students 15 mins before you need them for an appointment?
We would suggest to give a little more time. It can take us a few minutes for the student to collect their items and come down to the office.
Why do you need to sign in, even for lunch?
The answer to this is easy: safety.
Why do we ask parents to wait in the foyer?
When there are a few people chatting in the front office, it can be hard to hear people on the phone or others talking to us. We do appreciate keeping the office noise level low so that we can speak to people on the phone, address people in the office, and try our hardest to keep needs confidential.
Why do we send messages to students between the last 2 periods?
We wait to deliver between the last two periods of the day so that it is less likely that students would not forget or lose messages throughout the day. If the student needs to know a message that will be happening sooner in the day, those will be delivered promptly.
Why do we ask parents to pick up students for early dismissal before 2:45?
At that time of the day, students are starting to conclude their last period class. Students and teachers prepare to systematically go out to the lockers to pack up at the end of the day, allow students to go grab instruments, or take care of any needs prior to leaving. We just would like for people to be aware that after 2:45 it could take longer to locate students due to the movements of preparing to leave.
Why do we ask parents if the student knows he/she is delivering lunch? Lunch time in the front office is a busy time of day. They do not want any student to miss out on the opportunity of a lunch being delivered to them. This question is asked so that our front office staff knows if they need to call the classroom to let your student know to swing by the office to pick up their lunch prior to getting down to the lunchroom.
Why do we ask students to remember their adult’s phone numbers? To be able to call home, especially if the office is busy. Please know that we can help look a number up in Aeries, however, that may take a moment if there are more being helped in the office.
Why do we ask students to remember or have access to their student ID?
The student ID is a number that identifies each student. This ID number is typed in by the student if he/she is purchasing an item from the cafeteria, if he/she is late to school in order to get a tardy pass, and is used in the library to check out books.
Why can we not call students down before you get here?
For security reasons, the district has asked us to keep students in their classrooms until we can verify adult identification.
Notes from Principal Riebkes
We will be sending out weekly communication on Thursdays when school is in session. Any new information will be added to the top of each newsletter for easy viewing. For previous information already communicated, please use the dated tabs at the top of this newsletter.
On the first day of school you are welcome to come in and walk your student to his/her 1st period class starting at 7:30 am. You will need to park on Phillips Drive and walk through door #1 at the front of the school.
Teacher lunch schedules will be posted the first week of school. This will help if you would like to have lunch with your student for his/her lunch break.
Every year, our new students let us know that watching videos that explain expectations prior to coming to campus truly helps. So, grab some popcorn and cozy on up to the computer screen and enjoy!

Supply Packs!
If you ordered the supply packs through our PTA at the beginning of the summer, you may go down to the small gym during your Meet the Teacher event to pick these up. We then encourage you to deliver the supplies to your first period teacher who can assist you on distribution.
We will be communicating soon when our incoming 5th graders and new 6th graders will be receiving their technology. Our returning students in 6th grade have kept their technology over the summer. Please make sure that the technology is charged and ready to go!

We hope to see you at your Brave's Meet the Teacher night! Here are a few things to know and reminders in order to make this night a smooth transition to a new year:
We will have multiple doors open for you to access the building. You may park in the front parking lot, on the north side, and on the west side of campus. You will be greeted by a staff member who will help direct you to the side of the building where you will find room number information.
In the hallway, you will see students' names listed alphabetically by their last names. Next to it, you will see a room number. This is where a paper copy of the child's schedule will be found. You do not NEED to pick this copy up, it is there for you if you would like one or you are unable to pull up the schedule on Aeries. If you have OFFICE next to your child's name, please report to the office where more information will be given.
You will be able to visit each classroom to do a quick meet and greet with your Brave's teacher. Remember that our teachers are equally excited to meet their new Braves, so if you are in need to give information that lasts more than a couple of minutes OR you want to share confidential information, we ask that you set up a meeting for a different day. This event is just to walk your Brave's schedule and quickly meet your Brave's teachers.
THANK YOU ALL FOR COMING!
WHAT? We get our OWN locker?
We know that there is a lot of excitement when it comes to receiving a locker as well as decorating a locker - some for the FIRST time. We also know that there is a lot of apprehension of remembering the locker number as well as the combination. Please set your child's mind at ease. Teachers have had years of experience of teaching this skill as well as give plenty of time for students to practice.
If you are planning on coming up to school on Saturday, August 16th, anywhere from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for locker decoration, please follow the following expectations:
Locker dimensions: Length - 28 inches; Width - 9 3/4 inches
Refrain from adhering any decorations to the outside of the locker.
As long as items can be easily removed WITHOUT damaging the surface of the locker, it will be fine to use.
Remember that the purpose of the locker is for a safe place to store backpacks, books, etc... If the decor takes up too much space, it will defeat the main purpose of this space.
Talk through with your child how they will keep his/her locker number/combo with them throughout the day. So, he/she will have it memorized, however, having a plan for the first couple of weeks of where it could be stored may be a good idea.
Lockers will be given to students on the first day of school.
Do NOT send food that contains or may contain peanuts or tree-nuts to be eaten as a snack in the classroom. Snacks that do not contain nuts as an ingredient but say they may have been processed in a facility that has peanuts/tree-nuts will still be allowed as a snack.
Birthday parties are a special time for children, and we want to celebrate your child. If you want to send something fun to celebrate, we are requesting that you send non-food items (bubbles, pencils, stickers, etc...). Please do not send a treat containing peanuts/tree-nuts. Any treat brought into the classroom to be consumed by other students MUST be store bought with the ingredient labels attached.
Thank you for being a big part of helping keep BCI safe for all students!
We have students/staff with different allergy needs - some very severe. A severe allergy is an allergy that may cause an anaphylactice reaction. A child with a serious food allergy can suffer a reaction merely by touching an allergy containing food.
Please take note of the bell schedule. If you attended BCI last year, there are a couple of changes.
3rd period will be considered our HOMEROOM. During this 16 minute period, students will be receiving announcements, House activities, and team building.
6th period will be when lunch and recess take place. The 6th period teacher assignment will indicate when your student will have lunch. We will post this information soon.
Dismissal times have changed just a little. We still will do a stagger, however, we will be dismissing our BUS and WALKERS at 3:13 PM and our CAR RIDERS at 3:15 PM.
We encourage you to review the map for drop off and pick up expectations. Our focus is for safety for all. The easiest piece of advice is to follow our staff's instructions in our drop off/pick up lanes. If they need you to pull up, please follow this procedure; otherwise, you will be backing up the lanes for drop off which can cause students to be tardy or not being aware of safety concerns as they pertain to our crosswalks. Thank you in advance!
BRAVE NEWS
Thank you for dropping off your student(s) in the student loop using Phillips Dr. between 7:15 am and 7:45 am at Door #6. If it is past 7:45 your student will need to be dropped off in the front office to obtain a tardy pass for class.
The front entrance, Door #1, of the school is reserved for carpooling students of 3 or more who attend BCI. We reserve the front entrance also for SPED buses and those who are on crutches or in wheelchairs.
As a reminder, for the safety of our students and staff, no cell phone use is allowed, the speed limit is 10 mph on school property, and 20 mph in School Zones.
Parents are allowed to have lunch with their student in the vestibule or in the atriums during the student's lunch break.
