ambivalence, ambivalency は心理学用語で「両価感情」を意味する名詞で、初出は1912年とされている。この語は「周(囲)に、両側に」を意味するラテン語由来の連結形 ambi- と (equi)valence を英語において組み合わせたか、ドイツ語の Ambivalenz からの借用とされている。Ambivalenz はスイスの心理学者 P. E. Bleuler (1857-1939) による1910年頃の造語で、英語の equivalence にあたる Äquivalenz との類推によってラテン語の ambi- と valentia を組み合わせている。ラテン語の valentia は「力、強さ」を意味し、「強力である」を意味する動詞 valēre の現在分詞 valentem から派生したものである。また、valēre は value「価値」の語源にも含まれている。
『英語語源辞典』によると初出形は ambivalency で ambivalence は1924年から見られるとされているが、OED では ambivalence も ambivalency と同様に初出は1912年とされている：
He [sc. Eugen Bleuler] points in the first place, to the fact that every impulse is closely associated with its opposite, which he looks upon as a sort of protective mechanism and which he designates ambivalence. (Psychological Bulletin vol. 9 171)
ambivalence, ambivalency は equivalence からの類推による英語における語形成、またはドイツ語からの借用とされており、ambivalence と ambivalency はほぼ同義とされているが、-ence と -ency は何が違うのだろうか。『英語語源辞典』では、接尾辞 -ence は行為・性質・状態などを表す形容詞語尾 -ent に終わる形容詞に対応する名詞語尾、接尾辞 -ency は性質・状態を表す名詞語尾と説明されている。-ence と -ency のどちらも性質・状態を表す語につくが、-ence は行為を表す語にもつくようだ。また、OED によると、-ence と -ency は同じラテン語の -entia に遡り、-ence はフランス語を経由して英語に取り込まれたのに対し、-ency はラテン語から直接英語に取り込まれた。OED では -ence と -ency の両方の接尾辞が付く語の使い分けについて説明が付されている：
When the same word exists in both the ‑ence and the ‑ency forms, the tendency is (where the sense of the verbal etymon permits) to restrict the former to action or process (i.e. to connect its meaning rather with that of the verb than with that of the adjective), while the latter is used to express quality; compare coherence n. and coherency n., persistence n. and persistency n.
In a few instances both forms of a word have equally the sense of quality or condition; in most of these cases the one or the other of the forms has become obsolete or archaic; where they are both in current use, the distinction usually is that ‑ency has a more distinct reference to the sense of the related adjective or noun in ‑ent, considered as the predicate of some particular subject; compare for example, ‘sentience is an attribute of animals’ with ‘some maintain the sentiency of plants’. 同じ基体に -ence と -ency が付いた語は、「行為・過程」と「性質」で意味を違えたり、関連する -ent のついた形容詞・名詞の意味との結びつきの強さ、ある名詞の述部としての役割を果たすかどうかで差異を生み出したりすることで共存するか、どちらか一方が廃語や古語になっているようだ。
