8th Grade Family and Consumer Science is designed to provide students with a hands-on experience that will help prepare them for high school and beyond. Students will explore, Needs vs. Wants, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and Money and Banking. They learn all about navigating savings and checking accounts, debit vs. credit cards, and basic budgeting skills. They will create a Resume, learn how to fill out a Job Application, learn about the Interview process and then take part in a Mock Interview. A highlight for 8th graders is the Ice Cream Unit. In this unit, they will have a blind taste testing lab to develop texture and flavor creation. In groups, they will develop their own ice cream flavor, create it, name it, and design a container for marketing it. Students also use leftover ingredients from the 6th and 7th graders to play "Chopped". They absolutely love this competition to show off their cooking skills.
