Effective Fall 2023, Kean University will exclusively use Canvas as the Learning Management System (LMS), discontinuing the use of Blackboard. If you have a problem with Canvas, fill out a help request form here. Click on “Request a New Service”

Digital Gradebook Requirement (click on dropdown arrow to see expectations for Fall 2023)

All instructors are expected to use the Canvas gradebook, which in its most basic form is an online version of a physical gradebook. Instructors using Canvas to teach their course will find the digital gradebook automatically populates. Others will need to purposely set up their digital gradebook. 


Gradebook set up is easy and takes about 15 minutes. First, prior to the start of the semester instructors list major assignments in Canvas, including due dates and points.  During the semester, promptly after grading student work, instructors manually input students’ grades into the Canvas gradebook. Instructors interested in step-by-step instructions for setting up a gradebook can enroll in the CTL GRADEBOOK workshop (registration link). A Gradebook Overview video is also available here.  

Use of University-wide Canvas Template by Instructors teaching with Canvas (click dropdown arrow for more)

Instructors using Canvas to teach their courses are encouraged to use the Kean Canvas Template - a course shell that is pre-formatted with items such as links to key university resources, modules, quizzes, etc. The template saves time by providing pre-built items that instructors can customize and creates continuity for students by providing a common structure, thus making it easier for them to navigate the course. 


When a template is imported into an already developed course, the preformatted material layers into your course shell and does not replace any content. Any unwanted template content can be easily deleted. For step-by-step instructions on how to download and personalize a template in ways that employ best practices, instructors can register for the TEMPLATE workshop. (registration link).

 Even if you have not been officially assigned a course, you can still prepare your class now. Simply, build your course in your sandbox. If you do not already have a sandbox in Canvas or you need a second sandbox for a second class, fill this form and in the details section write a specific note. For example, you might write something like: "I am an adjunct requesting a Canvas sandbox. I have not been assigned a course yet, but I want to build my course now so my course shell will be ready if/when I get assigned a course."

As a requirement, faculty are expected to list their major assignments and post grades in an online gradebook within the Canvas platform. 

If you are unfamiliar with the process, please enroll in the "GRADEBOOK" class, which will provide you with step-by-step instructions. 

It is highly likely that if you teach with Canvas, you already use the GRADEBOOK elements.

Faculty are encouraged to teach with Canvas. To support & expedite Canvas integration the CTL created a template.

Faculty interested in this option should take the "TEMPLATE" class

Course progression:

Faculty interested in transferring a BB course to Canvas should 

(1) request migration of their BB course via this OCIS form 

(2) take "Maximizing Your Transferred BB Shell" class 

Faculty that migrate a BB corse should NOT take TEMPLATE or GRADEBOOK courses.
