Folders are containers for keeping programs, files and other folders. It can be used to organize information on a computer. Whereas, a file is an object on a computer that stores data, information, settings, or commands used with a computer program.
A file is the common storage unit in a computer, and all programs and data are "written" into a file and "read" from a file. A folder holds one or more files, and a folder can be empty until it is filled. A folder can also contain other folders, and there can be many levels of folders within folders.
Folders within a folder are technically known as "subfolders," but this distinction is often disregarded.
Folders are also called "directories".
File and folder naming conventions

characters not allowed include: asterisk (*), question mark (?), colon (:), double quotation mark (" "), less than and greater than (<>), pipe (|), slashes (/\)
con, nul and prn cannot be used to name a file or folder, these are reserved names.
NB: a single quotation mark (' ') can be used to name a folder or file in Windows.
A file extension is a suffix to the name of a computer file indicating the format of the file. It enables the operating system to know what applications are associated with the file.
