Getting Started/Growth Mindset Each year we begin with a short unit on Read 180 expectations, procedures, and Growth Mindset.
Year 1 (2023-2024)
Think Big It takes big thinking to solve big problems—and small problems, too. Leave it to the creative minds of inventors to come up with solutions. These big thinkers may be scientists or just everyday people. Students will discover that inventing takes serious imagination and resilience— even famed inventors have failed repeatedly. Other inventors have stumbled upon solutions by mistake. However they got there, their inventions have changed life as we know it.
Adapt... Or Die! Adaptations are an animal’s ticket to survival in the wild world of nature. From physical to behavioral changes, animals have adapted over time—improving their hunting skills, blending in to avoid predators—to thrive in their environments. Students will meet animals on land, in the sea, and in the sky to explore their amazing adaptations, and they’ll learn how humans are designing things that mimic animals—a sign of how we adapt.
True West In the 1800s, Americans moved in droves to unsettled territory in the West. With promises of land, fortune, and adventure, pioneers risked their lives journeying westward through rough terrain and harsh conditions. Students will explore the hardships and beauty of the pioneering life, discover the triumph of the venerable Pony Express, and learn about the struggle Native Americans face.
Year 2 (2024-2025)
What's Your Story? Each of us has a story to tell. The times we spend with family and friends, the new people we meet, and the situations we find ourselves in daily become etched in our memories and shape who we are. Students will learn how authors and other storytellers bring their experiences to life by creating entertaining stories to share with their audiences. Students will be inspired to reflect on their life experiences and craft unique stories.
The Earth Moves Earthquakes are among the most destructive natural disasters. The biggest ones cause buildings to topple and roads to crumble. Worse, earthquakes usually strike without warning, and they can trigger two other kinds of disasters: tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. Students will learn what causes these devastating forces of nature and discover new ways we’re protecting ourselves against them.
Go Team! The word “teamwork” conjures up thoughts of athletes and sporting events. However, people work in teams in countless other contexts every day, from restaurant chefs and kitchen staff to space astronauts. Students will read about various teams and see the crucial value of teamwork in accomplishing tasks, reaching goals, and saving lives.
