There is no set way of constructing, designing or arranging a collage. Allow the materials to shape your experience. Likewise, employ knowledge of compositional cues to shape a work that is meaningful and visually captivating.
GOAL: Source through imagery and materials to design a illustration that responds to a particular topic throughout time and across cultures. Consider the following prompts for idea generation:
COMPOSITION - the placement or arrangement of visual elements or 'ingredients' in a work of art
ASSEMBLAGE - art made by assembling disparate elements often scavenged by the artist, sometimes bought
COLLAGE - the technique and the resulting work of art in which pieces of paper, photographs, fabric and other ephemera are arranged and stuck down onto a supporting surface
COMBINE - an artwork that incorporates various objects into a painted canvas surface, creating a sort of hybrid between painting and sculpture
FORM - an artist's way of using elements of art, principles of design, and media
DESIGN - an outline, sketch, or plan, as of the form and structure of a work of art
Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.
