Digital Photography is a semester course that focuses on understanding the basic operations and functions of a digital single lens reflex camera and the manipulation of its settings to achieve a specific result. Students will learn about photographic elements of art and principles of design, composition, and lighting. They will explore the history of photography, learning about its scientific and technological developments, important innovators in the field, and relevance within diverse cultural contexts. Students will write and speak about aesthetic, technical and expressive qualities in a photograph, learning to critique their own and others work. Students learn image techniques and digital manipulation using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, teaching them how to archive, organize and optimize their photographs for print or web purposes. Students will learn how to manage and creatively alter digital images as well as critically analyze the use of visual media as a means of communication in our society today. They will be provided a greater level of autonomy, expected to pursue their own interests and develop an individual voice. Students will explore the significance of photography with in the larger context of the art word, and learn about the critical and varied application it has to the modern working world.
Includes the Basics of a Camera, Compositional Elements, Preparing to Shoot & various Shooting Styles.
Understand how to edit digital photographs using Photoshop. Experiment with shooting different ways and subjects.
To create a unified grid of 25 photos that reflect the given color scheme, element or principle of design.
Using Photoshop, design a mandala that is constructed from personal interests, photos taken, symbolic object and color.
DUE: Fri. 11/1 - Over the next three weeks, it is your responsibility to work through the following four assignments to better understand a DSLR camera while having fun taking great photos. These photos do not have to be edited, however, should show evidence of experimentation and growth. These tutorials can only be completed using a DSLR camera so use your time wisely in and out of class. These are in addition to our ongoing class assignments and can be completed in any order.

Experimenting with time lapse photography. Stage a composition of “Photography in Motion” in whatever sense that presents to you. Experiment how your choice in subject matter will change over time or in motion. Appropriate staging & lighting can coexist in any fashion to develop your final image.
