Drawing & Painting is a foundational studio art program emphasizing the fundamentals of drawing, painting, design and color theory. Students in Drawing & Painting will develop an understanding of the elements of art and principles of design using a variety of drawing & painting media. The concepts of composition, expression and craftsmanship will be explored. Students will also engage in reading, writing and discussion activities through art history, art criticism and aesthetics.
In terms of art, space is the area around, above, and within an object. With consideration to drawing and painting, our goal is to create the illusion of space. Positive space refers to the main focus of a picture, while negative space refers to the background. When used creatively and intelligently, positive and negative space together can tell a story using visual composition alone.
Create an illustration that combines two or more objects together. Construct a composition from those images and scale 1:1.5. Creatively block out areas to expose both the positive and negative space from each image.
