In this course, students will develop their strategy to read and understand various writings, and will acquire Japanese vocabulary, expressions and techniques necessary for writing, so that they can improve their comprehensive writing skills.

In addition, we will aim to deepen our understanding of Japanese society and culture from the contents of sentences picked up in class and to increase our knowledge in order to understand the background and context of sentences written in Japanese.

What to do in this class

  1. Read and write emails and SNS messages. (Polite email, communication with friends)

  2. Read and write the explanation. (Cuisine of your own country, convenient things in your own country, etc.)

  3. Read and write an essay. (About Japan / Japanese language, university life, etc.)

Find out how to read kanji, vocabulary, and expressions.

  • Read alone.

  • Discuss what you read in class.

<Write a sentence>

Make a plan for writing.

  • Write a sentence using the read sentence as a model.

  • Rewrite with reference to the teacher's feedback.

  • Read together and discuss your thoughts.

  • Rewrite again with reference to everyone's impressions.

Evaluation criteria

Evaluation is based on class participation (including attendance) and assignment submission.

In this course, students will develop their strategy to read and understand various writings, and will acquire Japanese vocabulary, expressions and techniques necessary for writing, so that they can improve their comprehensive writing skills.

Classes are divided into three parts: "advertising," "newspaper," and "Japanese culture.”

In "advertisement", we will work on comparative sentences and planning sentences, and in "newspaper", we will work on summary sentences and translations. In the final "Japanese culture", you will choose "my recommendation" from the Japanese culture and create a poster.

We aim to deepen our understanding of Japanese social culture from the content taken up in the class, and to increase our knowledge to introduce our own social culture in Japanese. We will learn useful sentence expressions in the real world.

Evaluation criteria

  • Class participation: 20%

  • Assignments: 50% (in-class assignments, homework, reflection)

  • Final task: 30% (poster)
