Tanjong Katong, Truly My Kampong II
Year : 2024
Medium : Watercolour
Dimension (cm) : 66 x 46 cm
This nostalgic Tanjong Katong beach village in sepia tone, about 100 years ago, had squarish-shaped houses on stilts, and high thatched roofs, different from the normal kampong house. The breezy coastal location that required no huge windows and ventilation holes beneath the roofs, together with the swaying coconut palms, evokes a sense of yearning for the good old days. As usual my late grandfather in his vintage Austin 7 would stop by to look for freshly-landed fish.
Remember the pantun:
"At Tanjong Katong the water is always blue
Where fair maidens reside.
Living in the same kampong, I long for you
Let alone when we are far from sight."
