Projek Kalsom is a transformative 3-month initiative that is carefully crafted to empower children from underserved communities through the gift of education. This comprehensive program is not just about imparting knowledge; it's a holistic journey including an exploration of untapped global issues, the enhancement of English language proficiency, and the cultivation of invaluable leadership skills.
A special jewel in The Kalsom Movement's crown, the Projek Kalsom Motivational Camp (PKMC) has been a distinctive trademark since the inception of The Kalsom Movement. This camp is not just an event; it's a transformative experience that leaves a lasting mark on the participants, empowering them with a newfound sense of purpose, confidence, and a broader perspective on their potential.
In essence, Projek Kalsom is a beacon of hope, a clear example of the transformative power of education when coupled with global awareness and leadership development. As we continue to champion the cause of empowering young minds, Projek Kalsom remains a cornerstone in The Kalsom Movement's commitment to building a future where every child has the tools and inspiration to break the shackles of disadvantage and reach for their dreams.
To promote the necessary knowledge on the pathways of post-secondary education in Malaysia and overseas.
To develop a strong sense of individual leadership and soft skills in beneficiaries and facilitators.
To encourage beneficiaries to use English language more comfortably.
To generate a substantial environment for self-and community developments.
To expose the students to proper daily applications of English language during the camp with other beneficiaries and facilitators.
Projek Kalsom Motivational Camp (PKMC) is a special week-long program designed for Form 4 students who are not only academically successful but also show strong determination in facing challenges from their disadvantaged backgrounds.
This impressive initiative began with the caring heart of Puan Kelthom Abdullah, a single mother in Kelantan, who faced the harsh truth of her children having to give up their educational dreams because of money problems. To tackle this issue, the creative Dato’ Haji Abdul Rahman Redza (London School of Economics) came up with the idea of a motivational camp to not only cheer up people but also to give hope to those in similar situations. This idea was strongly supported by Mr. Rizal Kahar (London School of Economics) and the late Mr. Adlan Benan Omar (University of Cambridge), the first Chairman of the United Kingdom and Eire Council of Malaysian Students (UKEC).
The first motivational camp in Jerantut, Pahang, was the start of Projek Kalsom, a movement that later got informal support from UKEC. The lasting Butterfly Projek Kalsom logo, representing change and toughness, was designed by the skilled Ms. Hayaty Mahdini.
The great success of the first camp led to another one in Grik, Perak, the next year, establishing Projek Kalsom as a yearly source of inspiration. Today, this impactful project is fully supported by the Malaysian High Commission in London and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, showing the continuous strength of kindness and the steady dedication to helping every worthy student achieve their potential.
TKM18, previously known as Projek Kalsom 18 was the first ever Projek Kalsom held in East Malaysia. It was a 5 days 4 nights camp in Miri, Sarawak which involved 115 Form 4 students from 8 schools. The activities revolved around three main themes: "I Will Survive!", "I Am The Predator!", and "Tour de Safari." These themes align with Projek Kalsom's 5 Principles of Excellence; Academic Excellence, English Language Proficiency, Career and Scholarship, Religious and Moral Values, and Physical Fitness. Through these themes and principles, Projek Kalsom provided a holistic learning experience, fostering personal and academic growth among participants.
During the same year, we saw the first top up program; Projek Kalsom 17 Revisited. It took place across various districts in Melaka from September 12th to September 14th, 2012. The program primarily involved former Form 4 students from Projek Kalsom 17 in 2011. Serving as a platform for self-expression, motivation, and SPM preparation, the initiative included 13 participating schools.
The event featured four facilitators from Projek Kalsom 17, chosen to represent the former facilitating and organizing team. Messages from absent facilitators and organizing members were passed to participants through these selected facilitators. The program aimed to maintain its educational and motivational impact on the participants, fostering a supportive environment for their personal and academic development.
The 27th edition of PKMC, held from 2nd to 5th August 2021 in Kuantan, Pahang, marked the organization's annual flagship event. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the camp innovatively transformed into a 4-day online experience. Despite the virtual format, the camp maintained its focus on exploring TKM's four significant pillars, particularly highlighting post-secondary education opportunities.
In this edition, three schools actively participated, contributing a total of 60 beneficiaries. Each school sent 20 Form 4 students to engage in the virtual camp. The online platforms served as the primary medium for communication, ensuring that participants, facilitators, and organizers could actively participate in the camp while staying connected from the comfort of their homes.
In a groundbreaking initiative during the 29th tenure of TKM, Projek Kalsom was introduced as a transformative 3-month empowerment programme. The primary objective is to serve as a foundational platform for the teenagers of Sekolah Tunas Bakti, Sungai Besi. The 29th edition of Projek Kalsom focused on equipping these teenagers with essential skills crucial for their future endeavors, specifically honing their communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills. This tenure witnessed the active participation of 51 beneficiaries, all eager to harness these skills as they navigate potential academic or non-academic pathways, setting a precedent for holistic personal development.
This edition featured three key phases, starting with Confidence Building, which enhanced communication skills and set the tone for a supportive learning environment. In the Educating Phase, topics like sex education and emotional intelligence were covered, aiming to cultivate critical thinking. The Hero Phase focused on refining skills like public speaking and conflict resolution, with beneficiaries applying these skills in real-world projects, becoming catalysts for positive change in their communities. In essence, this year’s Projek Kalsom was a transformative programme, equipping beneficiaries with essential skills and knowledge for impactful futures.
In its 30th year of existence, The Kalsom Movement (TKM) celebrates a significant milestone. To mark this occasion, we will be launching Projek Kalsom 30, a personal development programme designed for 30 high-achieving Form 5 students from lower-income families in Pahang, Malaysia, identified across six schools. This initiative comprises a 3-day 2-night camp in Pahang for all 30 students, focusing on modules such as patriotism, critical thinking, public speaking, team building, grooming, and etiquette. Additionally, we aim to provide ongoing assistance to 15 selected students in their post-SPM journeys by offering three online skills building workshops and a 4-months long mentorship programme, focusing on scholarship exploration and university selection. This well-rounded program aims to foster personal and academic growth, emphasizing communication skills, critical thinking, and holistic development pillars.
