  • Identify, understand and apply a variety of different structures and language features used in poetry,

  • Select specific vocabulary from a variety of interesting and high level words

  • Use reference tools such as dictionary, thesaurus, and rhyme zone,


  • Success Criteria

  • Students can:

Week 1 - 6 Term 2 inquiry Topic: Voygages and Navigation

Student Learning Intentions

We are learning to:

  • Active our prior knowledge by identifying what we already know about how people travelled to New Zealand and the way these vessels were powered.

  • Success Criteria

  • Students can:

  • Describe the different forms of energy used to power vessels that transported people to New Zealand before 1900

Activating Prior Knowledge:

  • In groups of 2-3, work collaboratively to record your thinking about how people were able to travel to New Zealand in earlier years.

Learn Activity 1:

  • Watch the video clip of how people came to New Zealand

Learn Activity 2:

  • Read the information from the Encyclopedia of New Zealand and NZ History about early navigation and encounters in NZ

Follow up task:

  • Reflect with your group and see if you can add anything new to your prior knowledge table.
