County Government of Nakuru in collaboration with Kabarak University, and other partners is working on a research project for the development of User Centered solutions for the management of Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.
Eclampsia is constant high blood pressure that occurs oftenly from 20 weeks of pregnancy. If pressure hits 140/90 or more 2 times in an hour consistently, it's an alert that the mother needs extra medical attention.
The smartwatches will be used by expectant mothers to help in early detection of mothers with pre-eclampsia symptoms during pregnancy among other danger signs during pregnancy.
County Partners Liason Officer, Dr. Toromo Kochei said that once the research project is approved, the county will adopt the use of smartwatches to monitor the blood pressure levels of the expectant mothers across the country.
The county is raising awareness about the disease through Antenatal clinic- ANC nurses. This will make it easier for mothers to understand the disease and the importance of the ANC visits.
Dr. Mvurya Mgalla from the Technical University of Mombasa said that the watches will measure the blood pressure of the mothers at regular intervals between 5 minutes to 1 hour depending on set preferences. It will also keep the history of readings that can later be caregivers.
Also present was the County Director for Administration and Planning, Dr Benedict Osore, Deputy County Chief Nursing Officer, Ms Judith Abong'o, and the County ICT officer for Health, Ms Grace Wangeci.
