Students are required to conduct themselves on school buses in a manner consistent with established standards for classroom behavior. Riding the bus is a privilege and should be respected and valued. School bus rules also apply when traveling for extra-curricular activities under school sponsorship.
The school principal may suspend or revoke the riding privileges of students and/or take other disciplinary actions for students who have disciplinary problems on the bus. If a student’s riding privileges are suspended or revoked, the student’s parents are responsible for seeing that the student gets to and from school safely.
The following expectations are instituted to maintain order and safety:
Bus Stop
Be present at the bus stop prior to arrival of the bus.
Wait in a safe place, off of the main road, allowing the driver enough room to stop.
Students should not play in the roadway/street, should not sit on the curb, should not run in the bus loading/unloading area
Wear bright colors if there is snow, rain, or fog.
Boarding the Bus
Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before you get on or before you stand up to get off the bus.
If students must cross the highway to board their bus, they should cross at least ten feet in front of the bus, never behind it.
When entering the bus, students must enter in an orderly fashion and in accordance with instructions from the bus driver.
Younger students should be allowed to enter the bus first.
Students should go directly to an assigned seat and remain seated while the bus is in motion.
Exiting the Bus
Students must remain seated until the bus comes to a full stop.
When exiting the bus, students are to leave the bus in an orderly manner. The students in the front seats will depart first.
Students must leave the bus at their regular stop.
Students must not loiter around the bus.
If students must cross a highway, they are to do so only at the front of the bus and at a distance of at least ten feet in front of the bus. They must not cross until the bus driver has signaled that it is safe to do so.
Riding the Bus
Be respectful, follow all bus driver instructions and be courteous to the driver.
Be safe by keeping the bus aisle clear and remaining in your seat while the bus is in motion. Keep hands, feet, and inappropriate comments to yourself to ensure an orderly environment.
Be responsible by talking with friends quietly so the driver will not be distracted.
Save food, including gum, and drinks for when you exit the bus to prevent spills and accidents.
Keep your personal belongings secure and with you at all times. The bus aisle is to be kept clear of feet, arms, and other objects. Books, coats, and all other objects should be held on students’ laps.
Students should not deface the bus. Vandalism either willful or careless to the bus will be paid for by those responsible, and the school board’s regulation regarding parent liability will be enforced.
Students are to be silent at railroad crossings so the bus driver can hear railroad warning signals.
State regulations prohibit smoking on the bus at any time.
Students should not tamper with the bus or any of its equipment, including emergency equipment.
Students should not extend arms, legs, or heads out of the bus, or throw objects outside the bus windows.
No glass containers, noisemakers of any type, water pistols, pea shooters, or weapons of any type are to be brought on the bus. No soda containers may be carried in hand on the bus.
No pets or animals are allowed on the bus.
Requesting Bus Changes
All requests for a student to ride a bus different from their regular bus must be in writing.
If a student is going home with another student, parents of both students must send a note requesting the change.
