Class overview

This course is a combination of Grade 9 Applied and Academic English. While the learning expectations and assignments will differ slightly, we will be reading the same texts and working together as a class. The major goals of this course are for you to:

• develop your oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills

• prepare you for success in future secondary school academic programs and in your daily life

• prepare you to write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test

What can I expect from this course?

• In this course we will read a variety of short stories, poetry, articles, essays, and novels by different authors.

• You will have an opportunity to think critically about each text and to make connections between the text and your own life, your experience with other texts, and things happening in the world.

• You will communicate using various forms of writing, and you will be given opportunities to communicate creatively (through artistic forms, technology, etc.)
