Personal Mission Statement
"People are working harder than ever, but because they lack clarity and vision, they aren't getting very far. They, in essence, are pushing a rope with all of their might."
- Dr. Stephen Covey
A personal mission statement is about discovery as much as it is about creation.
The purpose of a Personal Mission Statement is to inspire you and provide you with direction and guidance for your life. Personal mission statements were popularized by Stephen Covey when he suggested that people create them in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People.
Covey recommends not to rush the process or set rigid timetables for yourself; rather, go slowly through the process, ask yourself the right questions, and think deeply about your values and aspirations.
A meaningful personal mission statement contains two basic elements. The first is what you want to do – what you want to accomplish, what contributions you want to make. The second is what you want to be – what character strengths you want to have, what qualities you want to develop.
"We all got two wolves in us, a good one and a bad one — and they BOTH wanna eat… We just gotta feed that good wolf a little more than the other one."
Before you Begin writing your Personal Mission Statement, consider the following :
1. Write down your roles as you now see them. Are you satisfied with the mirror image of your life?
2. Start a collection of notes, quotes, and ideas you may want to use as resource material in writing your personal mission statement. Check out quotes on Pinterest!
3. Identify a project you will be facing in the near future and apply the principle of mental creation. Write down the results you desire and what steps will lead you to those results.
