The Hawai'i Department of Education is thrilled to welcome Kamea Hadar, local artist who brought the mural of Duke Kahanamoku and Carissa Moore to life, to the 3rd Annual Middle Level Student Leadership (MLSL) Summit on March 25, 2026. Kamea’s artwork, which captures the iconic surfing legends from Hawaii, celebrates both their contributions to the sport and their cultural significance to the islands. His mural, located on King Street and Pensacola, is a striking 150-foot depiction that honors the legacies of Duke and Carissa, who have inspired generations of surfers worldwide. During the summit, Kamea will share the story behind this monumental piece, offering insights into his creative process and the deep connection he feels to these two remarkable figures. Students will have the opportunity to learn firsthand how Kamea’s artistic vision came to life and how the mural serves as a lasting tribute to Hawaiian culture.
