In 2018, a Service Learning Project was initiated at Keaau High School (KHS) to inventory, identify, name, and map the diverse plant species on campus.
Project Development and Funding:
The idea was conceived during Biology classes and formalized into a proposal by Ms. Tammy Ramangmou, a UH Manoa teaching candidate, under the mentorship of Mrs. May Richard.
The project was approved by KHS Principal Mr. Dean Cevallos in March 2018.
A grant of $1,442 was secured through DonorsChoose in August 2018 to fund the project.
Project Implementation:
KHS STEM Club members and other students, staff, and community members collaborated on the project.
Arboretum tags were created with KHS branding, scientific and common names, and QR codes linking to an interactive website.
Participants utilized various technologies, including GIS, GPS, photography, and Google tools, to document and map plant species.
Project Impact:
The project enhanced participants' awareness of native and introduced plant species.
It provided opportunities to develop skills in photography, GIS mapping, design, taxonomy, and collaboration.
The KHS Plant Identification website, linked to the school's main website, offers an interactive learning resource for the community.
