Capstone Project

In the Health Careers Academy, all Year 3/4 students embark on a culminating capstone project, a significant undertaking designed to explore a personal passion within the health or healthcare field. This project requires students to delve into a current industry issue, conducting thorough research to develop a viable solution.

Supported by a dedicated community mentor, students craft a comprehensive research paper, demonstrating their ability to synthesize complex information. The project culminates in a formal oral presentation before industry experts and community members, where students articulate the identified health issue, their proposed solution, the data collection methodology, and the personal and community impact of their work. Throughout this journey, students maintain a portfolio, documenting their learning process and showcasing their unique interests in a format of their choice.

Senior Capstone Recognition

The Health Careers Academy would like to recognize senior Hulaliakawai Malika Patterson, whose heartfelt project and presentation brought judges to tears.

Hulali's personal definition of a capstone presentation included the opportunity to guide a community in reshaping their perspectives and overcoming challenges through the implementation of solutions that foster a better future.

Her bravery and vulnerability in sharing her family's struggles with psychoactive substance abuse fueled her passion to speak to classes on campus and to collaborate with Aloha United Way and recovery patients at Ho'omau Ke Ola. She also organized opportunities to provide words of encouragement to recovering patients, understanding that this simple gesture could be vital to her family members' recovery process.

The purpose of a senior capstone project is for our students to address a health-related concern or issue within their community and implement solutions to be part of the solution, driven by their personal desire to help. Knowing that students, like Hulali, can achieve this, we are confident they will become compassionate, caring, competent, and empathetic future healthcare workers.
