Marion Lyman-Mersereau

Born and raised on O'ahu, Marion Lyman-Mersereau helped build the Hokulea and was a crew member on its fateful journey in March 1978 and on a subsequent voyage to Tahiti in 1980. Marion recently retiredafter 34 years as a middle school social studies teacher, yoga teacher, and high school outrigger canoe paddling coach. She has been sharing the story of Eddie Aikau and the Hokulea for over 30 years.

Marion is interviewed by local Emmy Award winner Lacy Deniz in our kick-off video filmed at Hono'uli'uli Middle School in April.

What really happened to Eddie Aikau? In her inspirational children's book, Eddie Wen' Go: The Story of the Upside-Down Canoe, former Hokulea crewmember Marion Lyman-Mersereau imagines what Hawaii's ocean creatures saw when the voyaging canoe capsized and the heroic Aikau went for help.
