While comparison can be a motivating tool on the surface level, getting too caught up in self-comparison can be harmful. Unhealthy comparisons such as that with social media, puts teens at risk of lower self-esteem and consequently, self-destruction.
We wanted to see the biggest challenges influencing students' lives. To do that, we used the results of a survey given out to our school provided by our sponsor, the head counselor. We found that the most common answers were related to comparison in the school environment. Therefore, our team has chosen to focus on the Risk Factors involved with comparison as well as the Protective Factors that can help students fight it.
Here are some of the major results seen through this survey:
Around half of students struggle with self-comparison with their peers.
Almost 80% of students experience academic stress. Our school tends to foster high academic competition, which can lead to feeling pressured and promote constant comparison with peers.
Around half of students regularly talk about their grades, which can lead to increased academic pressure influenced by imposed expectations.
Our Mental Health Consultant is Mrs. Amanda Zambiasi, the lead counselor of Liberty High School. Mrs. Zambiasi provided us with helpful advice and resources such as the Safe School Survey listed above. She helped us refine the focus of our campaign by offering insights based on real situations that she experiences as the head counselor, and even advised us on the best practices for social media to make sure that it is inclusive for diverse perspectives.
