Yee Hong Pua is currently in the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. He is an alumni member and former president of LTHS DECA. He says, “My DECA experience throughout my four years in high school were full of mentorship, leadership opportunities, and fun. I was able to improve my public speaking and casing skills by practicing and competing in roleplays up to ICDC, and I learned how to work with customers through our Stockyard. I also made lifelong friends and connections through our DECA socials and officer team. I've carried the skills I learned from DECA into college. Thanks to DECA, I had the casing knowledge to get into a consulting organization and found the transition into business school to be seamless. A lot of the things we learn in the beginning of a business degree are things DECA already taught me.”
Aayush Kadakia is the former vice president of finance in the 21-22 school year. He is an alumni member and a current student at Harvard University. He says, “I grew up hearing about DECA, and walking into high school, the only piece of advise stressed by my older brother was: “join DECA.” But, little did I know that walking through those double doors and scanning the “New Member Sign-Up” QR-code would change my life. From my first practice role-play as a 14-year-old freshmen to my last DECA-wide social as an 18-year-old senior, DECA evolved to embody so much of what I cherished in high school - community, challenges, support-networks, competitions, etc - and, beneath the surface, reshaped my career decisions. Now, as college student nervous to enter the professional environment, I can fully appreciate the power of DECA’s competitions. From something as simple as a firm handshake to something more nuanced like buttoning my jacket prior to sitting during an interview, I quickly realized I was already at home in the business world thanks to the lessons taught to me by DECA.”
Sanjana Kodali is our 21-22 vice president of career development. She is a current alumni student and is attending UCLA this year. She says “My DECA experience over the years was a lot of fun but also helped prepare me for my future. I was able to grow my skills in presenting and problem solving, while also making memories with my friends. When I became an officer senior year, I was able to further grow my skills and honestly my experiences in DECA have really helped me in college specifically while applying for business and consulting clubs. A lot of the application processes for these clubs and internships include casing and situation-based questions and DECA has really prepared me in being able to answer these questions on the spot and think creatively to come up with solutions. Overall, I am really grateful for my experiences at DECA and am happy I was able to gain those experiences and memories over the years!”
