What is SEL?
SEL stands for social and emotional learning. Casal.org describes social and emotional learning as "the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain relationships, and make responsible decisions." What Are the Components of SEL?
Each of the components that make up social and emotional learning can be taught and encouraged at home and at school. SEL is a mindset that can pair academic learning with the social and emotional learning. Recognize their personal emotions and how they can effect their actions.
Self-assess personal strengths and limitations.
Effectively manage their own stress and can manage their impulses.
Provide personal motivation to set and reach for positive goals.
Empathize with others and respect unique differences between individuals and groups.
Establish and maintain healthy relationships.
Effectively communicate and collaborate with others.
Make good decisions based on evaluations of all possible consequences, as well as consideration for others.
