The pandemic has taken a toll on students as well as teachers this past year. Teachers and students had to adapt to a new teaching model, Virtual Distance Learning. With this new model, there has been challenges for students as well as teachers. Our district gave students the option to show their videos while in class virtually, and of course they chose not to turn on their screens. This made teaching more difficult as the teachers taught to black screens each day. Part of this challenge was connecting with the students while not seeing them. During most classes the students would not respond and not show video. Checking for understanding was difficult and not having visuals made it hard for students as well. I designed my inquiries to address these issues. I incorporated exit tickets into my lessons as an easy way to assess the students' understanding. I also used videos that coincided with the topics in the lessons in order to provide another venue of information that included visuals. These videos were played after the direct instruction lecture and were uploaded to our google classroom to revisit if needed. Using the exit tickets I was able to determine that most students were able to use this additional material to understand the topics being covered. After implementation of these strategies more than half of my students in third period handed in assignments regularly.
