The Cal Grant

Cal Grant A:
- Purpose: Helps low- to middle-income students cover tuition and fees at four-year universities or programs lasting two or more years.
- GPA Requirement: Minimum 3.0 high school GPA or 2.4 community college GPA.
- Community College Rule: Held in reserve for up to two years if used at a community college before transferring.
Cal Grant B:
- Purpose: Provides a living allowance (access award) and tuition/fee assistance for very low-income students enrolled in programs of at least one year.
- GPA Requirement: Minimum 2.0 high school GPA or 2.4 community college GPA.
- Structure: First-year students at four-year schools typically receive only the access award; tuition and fees are added in subsequent years.
Cal Grant C:
- Purpose: Supports students pursuing vocational, technical, or occupational training programs lasting from 8 weeks to 2 years.
- GPA Requirement: None (the only Cal Grant without a GPA requirement).
- Selection: Limited in number and awarded based on competitive scoring and a required supplemental form.
