Topics: States of Matter
Goal: The goal of this unit is to master the definition of matter, the states of matter, and the processes that are involved for changing from one state to another. This unit teaches the definition and application of matter in solid, liquid, and gas state. Students will identify and name a range of items in each state as well as identify the processes of evaporation, freezing, melting, and condensation. Students will define and apply these processes.
September
Topics: Simple Machines
Goal: The goal of this unit is to master identification and discrimination of common simple machines. Students will define what the purpose of simple machines are. They will name, define, identify, and list the following simple machines: lever, pulley, screw, inclined plane, wheel and axel, and wedge. This unit will focus on identifying these machines in every items we use in school and our homes.
October
Topics: Plant Life Cycle and Photosynthesis
Goal: The goal of this unit is to understand the life cycle of a plant as well as the process of photosynthesis. The unit teaches the definition of pollination and germination in the plant life cycle process. Students will work on identifying the stages in the plant’s life cycle: seed, sprout, and seeding. This unit teaches the process of photosynthesis. Students will identify and define light energy, carbon dioxide, oxygen and water with the photosynthesis process.
November
Topics: Food Chain, Predator & Prey, and Herbivore, Carnivore, & Omnivore
Goal: The goal of this unit is to master concepts related to animal food chains. This unit teaches the definition of a food chain and identifying animals within common food chains in a variety of environments. Students will learn the definition of predator and prey and identify these roles within food chain systems. This unit also teaches the definition of herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores and teaches examples within each group.
December
Topics: Organs and Systems in the Body
Goal: The goal of this unit is to master the definition, location, and function of the liver, bladder, intestines, and kidneys. This unit also teaches the definition of the skeletal, circulatory, muscular, and nervous systems within the body. Students will define and label these systems.
January
Topics: Earth’s Layers and Natural Resources
Goals: The goal of this unit is to master identification and description of the layers of the Earth: the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. This unit also teaches the definition and identification of natural resources. Students will learn to discrimination and define renewable and nonrenewable resources. Students will sort, list, and label natural resources according to these two categories.
February
Topics: Water Cycle
Goal: The goal of this unit is to master identification, description, and definition of the components of the water cycle. This unit teaches the processes of precipitation, collection, evaporation, and condensation. Students will define, identify, and label these processes.
March
Topics: Movement of the Earth
Goal: The goal of this unit is to master concepts related to movement of the Earth. This unit teaches the process of the Earth rotating and the Earth revolving. Students will identify and describe the results and function of the Earth’s rotation and revolution and sort components based this two processes.
