TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS

7-8th Grade: Logan Hildreth

7TH GRADE SCIENCE | MOUNTAIN CREEK MIDDLE SCHOOL

What do you love about science teaching or what made you want to be a science teacher?

I love getting students engaged in their learning and enjoying science

What are some of your hobbies and/or how do you like to spend your time outside of teaching?

I love the outdoors, especially boating and waterskiing

What's the best advice or mantra you live by for your teaching?

You may not help or change them all but the ones you do are worth the effort

9-12th Grade: Lisa Craig

PHYSICS | MOUNTAIN RIDGE HIGH

"Lisa Craig gives real life examples of what students are learning.  She makes students feel like they are discovering the principles they are learning about.  Her style of teaching and the projects the students do in class really helps the material stick.  She is passionate about physics which makes her students passionate."

What do you love about science teaching or what made you want to be a science teacher?

I've always wanted to be a teacher and used to make my little brother play school with me when I was a kid...haha!  I had an amazing high school physics teacher whose love of the subject inspired me to pursue physics as a degree.

What are some of your hobbies and/or how do you like to spend your time outside of teaching?

I love to do anything outdoors, especially hiking, backpacking, and skiing.  Any day I get to spend outside is a great day!  I also love to go out to eat and try new restaurants.

What's the best advice or mantra you live by for your teaching?

I love getting kids who think they aren't "good at science" or don't like science to be curious about the world around them. When a student who has those feelings suddenly has a lightbulb moment and I know their curiosity has been piqued...that's what makes me come to work every day.  My advice to other teachers would be to help those students believe in themselves.

THOUGHTS ON SCIENCE INSTRUCTION

Everything You Need to Know About 3-Dimensional Learning

The transition from traditional science teaching to NGSS-based 3-dimensional teaching can be tough! Read this article for a quick overview!

Designing Quality Science Assessments

Assessments are difficult to write and design, especially now that we are moving to assessments based on the Science and Engineering Practices as well as your science content. Use the article link below to see STEM Teaching Tool's steps to designing a 3D assessment.

NOAA's Education Resources

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration may not seem like a great resource for science educators, but they are! No matter what level or type of science you teach, they cover it all. Their goal is to "keep people informed and engaged in our plant's dynamic environment, from space weather to fish migration patterns. We provide education resources, educator and student opportunities, and competitive funding for education projects.
