TEACHER SPOTLIGHTS
9-12th Grade: Erin Celland
BIOLOGY| SUNSET RIDGE MIDDLE SCHOOL
"Erin has been great to work with over the years here at Sunset Ridge Middle School. She has become an amazing friend. It’s been fun watching her share her love of science with her students in unique and relevant ways. Erin’s students thoroughly enjoy the many hands-on activities, labs, and dissections that they encounter throughout the year."

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
7-8TH GRADE SCIENCE
No upcoming Professional development... yet
We don't have any professional development coming up for 7th and 8th-grade science, but if you would like to meet with your team for a day of planning we would love to help make that happen! Just email Tori Johnson (victoria.johnson@jordandistrict.org) for more information.
9-12TH GRADE SCIENCE
Continuing Teacher Collaboration Days
We are continuing to host collaborations and provide substitutes for teachers to get together to plan, build, and work on various aspects of teaching science content. If you are interested in attending any of the collaboration days, please email Tori Johnson (victoria.johnson@jordandistrict.org).
THOUGHTS ON SCIENCE INSTRUCTION
Is the Scientific Method a Thing of the Past?!
For decades science education has engaged students in a version of science inquiry that reduces the investigation of the natural world to a fixed, linear set of steps—sometimes devoid of a deep focus on learning and applying science concepts. Is this really how science happens in the real world? And are we setting our students up for success by teaching this way?
Science & Engineering Practice: Developing & Using Models
We use and evaluate models all of the time and so do our students, but how do we teach them with an emphasis on science? Check out the links and the video to the right for how you can incorporate this Science & Engineering Practice in your classroom.
CONTENT RESOURCES
ALL SECONDARY SCIENCE
Teacher Lesson Repository
As teachers use the Exemplary Units, they have been making tweaks and sharing them with us. We love that! Teachers have also been sharing with us their great ideas for lessons. This is a repository where we will be putting those tweaks and shared lessons. Each of the lessons is tied to NGSS, SEEd, and our district Exemplary Units. Please explore, use, and tweak these lessons! If you have lessons you would like to share, please email or share them with Tori Johnson at victoria.johnson@jordandistrict.org.
Need Help with Multi-Language Learners?
We are getting more and more multi-language learners in Jordan School District and we want to make sure we are supporting you as teachers as well as your students. Teaching and learning science is difficult, especially when a student is learning in their non-primary language.
Click the link below to check out some of the resources that may help the multi-language learner instruction in your classroom.

It's that time again! Need some help preparing your students for the RISE test? Look here for some resources to help! Did you know that RISE provides tutorials for all of their assessment question types or that there are proficiency (performance) level descriptors available? Check out the links below to find out more.
Real-Life Data and Research in the Classroom?!
Have you heard of Data Nuggets? This website provides "activities that bring real scientific data into the classroom, guiding students through the entire process of science while building their quantitative abilities Click the link below to see all the wonderful things that the people behind Data Nuggets have created!

Bring Researchers to Your Classroom!
Skype a Scientist allows students to meet and interact with real scientists doing work in their field! This resource is free and so much fun. Teachers can even regularly meet with scientists to have Q&A sessions with their students!
More Tools for Analyzing & Interpreting Data!
Turner's Graph of the Week (GOW) is a teaching tool that walks students through interpreting, understanding, writing, and analyzing graphs! This resource has student sheets available and ready to go for your classroom! Turner's GOW is a great resource for teaching Science & Engineering Practices, starters, ACT practice, and so much more!

How to Avoid Burnout...
It's that time of year again... The snow hasn't gone away, the sky is grey, the students are getting on our nerves and ours on theirs, and we are EXAUSTED! It is at this time of year that teachers begin to experience burnout. Nobody likes those feelings so how do we avoid them?
Your Brain on Nature
An increasing number of studies are showing the power of natural environments on our mental health. Who knows what a walk in the woods can do?!
