Running Toward the Truth: A Review of the Maze Runner

By Kairo Lara

The Maze Runner is an amazing movie that gives the audience a really passionate and suspenseful experience. The Movie consists of the characters not having their memory, and with the audience not knowing what anything is, as well as giving us a feeling of the world they’re living in. One thing about the movie that really stood out to me while watching the film was how the director's camera work moved and really knew how to capture the moment of the scene. A couple of things I disliked about the film were that the characters' decision-making was very questionable at times.

“Thomas,” the Main Character, doesn’t really see a lot of character development, but instead he just stays the same courageous, smart, and caring character he is. One of the biggest character developments we do see during the film is within “Gally”; he comes off as the character who just seems like he can’t be reasoned with and constantly interferes with the goal of the other characters. This is simply due to his fear of change and leaving the Labyrinth. One thing I noticed while watching The Maze Runner was how the characters facial expressions and body language really showed if they were scared or unsure. This little aspect of the movie really made me feel what they were feeling, it really brought the scene to life.

The Maze Runner is currently being streamed on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.

Overall Watching this movie was a great experience and I do recommend it to those who have not seen it, I would definitely give this movie a 3.5/5.

Life Sucks Sometimes

Article by Bree Jones

Imagine yourself having a perfect day. What would your perfect day look like? Would it be having your favorite breakfast? Mine would be French Toast, with a side of hash browns and some bacon. Would you be hanging out with your friends, or just peacefully alone in your room? I would prefer friends. Maybe you go to the arcade, or an amusement park, or just to a friend's place? What about all 3!? Personally, I would like to do all three. What if you bumped into someone in the street, said sorry, then they gave you a million dollars?...That one’s less likely to happen but Hey! It’s your perfect day! Now keep imagining your perfect day. Then imagine the next day, being even better. Then the day after that being ABSOLUTELY terrible. Everything is just awful that day. You’re stressed out by classes, your job (if you have one), your parents, maybe even your friends. You just want to scream so loud until you can’t anymore or until it hurts, you want to cry so much until you can’t cry anymore, or until your eyes burn. Imagine yourself laying on a bed, a couch, or the floor even, just feeling pathetic.

I felt that not too long ago, I was so stressed out and overwhelmed with school, rehearsals for the musical I was in, and so much more. I was just bottling up my emotions, thinking I was perfectly fine and happy. When I went home one day I just…started crying…I tried to stop but I just couldn't. I kept crying and crying and crying for what felt like hours, it was most likely 30 minutes. After crying, I didn’t look great. My hair was messed up, my eyes red and puffy, I looked awful. I thought I would feel worse after crying but I surprisingly felt better. I know that I just needed to cry, to empty those bottled up feelings, to feel happy again. I know I’ve had some stressful moments in life and I have more waiting for me. I know you, as the reader, reading this article, have had stressful moments and have more waiting for you. My point for this article is Yes. Life Sucks Sometimes. It gets really hard sometimes that makes you just want to give up. It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you come from, or what you do, at some point in your life, life will get really difficult. But it won’t always be difficult.

Isn’t that weird? Those difficult moments in your life that last a few hours, days, months, maybe even years, will eventually leave. We think that those times we are feeling terrible, depressed, or just going through a rough patch, we think that it’ll never go away, but it eventually does!! Life will get better, trust me. You might not think it now, but soon enough it will! We all think about the bad things in our life. And think “Well, this is my life, and it’ll never get any better”. We always think about the bad things in our life, maybe, just maybe, we can think about the good things? Think about what makes you happy, what makes you feel excited, what makes you feel overjoyed, even what makes you smile just a little bit. When you’re feeling down, take a few minutes to think about what makes you happy. Yes. Life Sucks Sometimes, just don’t let it affect your entire life. Just take a few minutes and enjoy the little things that make you happy.

Jags Jam: WJ’s Favorite Christmas Songs

By Daxton Reid

As Christmas is just around the corner, West Jordan high school’s Christmas spirit is unnoticed. Countless Christmas songs are played everyday in between passing periods while our students get to class. With all these songs being played, have you wondered what song is the most popular of the bunch?

I went around West Jordan High school interviewing 51 students and there is a very wide variety of songs. There were 31 different Christmas songs listed in my interviews. One student, Emilio Romero, sophomore here at West Jordan, said his favorite song was Jingle Bells but the NBA YoungBoy version. Other answers I have never heard before like the song Cozy Little Christmas.

From all the interviews there were two songs that stuck out the most. The first song is, All I Want For Christmas is You. This song received 6 votes and was the leader for a majority of the interviews. Although this song had around 10% of the votes, it was only second behind Last Christmas. This song made what some would consider a comeback and ended with 9 votes taking up around 20% of the interviews.

While “Last Christmas” and “All I Want for Christmas is You” may have topped the chart among students, every song has contributed to the festive mood around the school. While the Jags prepare to go on winter break the Christmas cheer continues to grow, leaving us with an amazing memory heading into the year 2026.

Christmas Music: Before or After Thanksgiving?

By Thomas Young

Every year, right around November, when the trees become bare and the temperatures drop drastically, there arises a heated debate: Should we start listening to Christmas music now or wait until after Thanksgiving? Of course, there are strong opinions on both sides and valid reasons for both, so I polled West Jordan students and staff to hear their reasoning and see their stance on the issue.

I polled 66 people, and 29 thought we should start listening before Thanksgiving, and 37 thought Christmas music should wait until after Thanksgiving. Some of the reasoning I heard in favor of listening before Thanksgiving was that there are so many different Christmas songs, and you need the extra time to listen to everything.

Another argument claimed that because Christmas brings so much joy, you should have more time to listen to the joyful music that comes with it. On the other side of the argument, people argued that Thanksgiving needs to be more fully recognized. They said that Thanksgiving is passed over too quickly because of Christmas, and so we need to wait to start listening to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. I also heard that if we start listening too soon, we’ll be tired of Christmas music once Christmas arrives.

In short, debate on this topic is intense, and both sides have many reasons to support their arguments. Hopefully, everyone can agree on how great holiday music is; however, regardless of the time of year we start listening!

My Growth, Experience, and Struggles of Senior Year

by Lily McGrew

My last first day of high school. This is something many people look forward to in life. It’s an accomplishment, a huge one in fact. The year your family is most proud of you, the final feeling of happiness. You made it. The feeling of freedom, independence, and success in yourself. A lot of people tend to pressure you into choosing a college, or they want you to have your future planned out already… I’m only 17, let’s not do that yet. Truth is, you don’t; you’re in charge of your own life and how long you want it to take. This year is important, yes, but this is the time I want to really focus on myself and not worry about the cost of college or an apartment. I’ll study while I work instead, I think that’s a pretty mature decision I’ve made.

Besides all the stress and pressure being put on me, so far this year hasn’t been too bad. I’ve made 2 really good friends, which is very exciting for me, considering I’m very reserved. My classes are super fun, especially my child development class. I think it’ll help give me experience for what I want to be in the future. I’ve gotten close to a lot of people, and I think that’s helped me come out of my shell.

A Month Later

School is going… Pretty terrible right now, I’m not going to lie. But I’m confident I’ll get through it, with the help of my family, boyfriend, and peers. My motivation is slowing down, and it’s hard to stay focused and awake most days. WE’LL GET IT SOMEDAY!!

There’s a lot of work this year, and it’s almost hard to keep up sometimes. Some days school can be ok for me, others not so much. I love the days when everything feels right, and everything goes right for me. The great thing about senior year is that you discover a lot about not only others, but yourself. I think that opens up a lot of new feelings, connections, and opportunities. Senior year has been interesting and full of life. My life motto for this year is, “Just try your best, you might not get what you want on the way there, yet. But it gives you more time

and room to work for the rest.” I hope anyone can understand this and feel supported. Senior year might make you feel lost. But it helps you to grow.

Favorite Christmas Song

By Megan Gray

After asking many people which Christmas song is their favorite, “Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber was the most popular. “It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” by Michael Buble, and “All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey

The majority voted for Mistletoe by Justin Bieber. However, it was close by 3 votes. “Mistletoe” with 20 votes and “All I Want for Christmas is You”. At 17, and finally, “It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” with 13.

Thanksgiving: The Disrespected Holiday

By Ben Scharman

Whenever you wake up the day after Halloween, there is one thing that is always certain: people will be rushing to get the Christmas trees up. However, there is one holiday that always hides in the shadow of Christmas. That is the great Thanksgiving, which, in my opinion, is the most underrated holiday.  Whenever November comes, radio stations start playing Christmas music, stores start selling Christmas decorations, and people never stop talking about how excited they are.

People are often so blinded by the excitement of the presents and treats that Christmas brings that they forget the deeper meanings of the holiday. Christmas is about giving back and showing love for each other. However, to do that, you must recognize the people and things you are thankful for. This is where Thanksgiving comes in. You must go through the thankfulness of Thanksgiving to get to the cheer of Christmas.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Christmas is a great holiday and deserves its spot on the Mt. Rushmore of holidays. However, Thanksgiving also deserves its spot up there, too. Thanksgiving isn’t as big and grand as Christmas. It doesn’t have its own music, you don’t see its own decorations at the stores, but how the holiday is celebrated, and the meaning behind it, take it above a lot of the other holidays.

Hanging out with family and friends, eating delicious food, and playing football is just an amazing combo. Also, having leftovers for weeks after makes life so much easier. And don’t get me started on the turkey naps you can have afterwards as well. When you put all of this together, I don’t see why anyone would forget about this great holiday.

Which 2025 Meme has Taken WJHS by Storm

By Daxton Reid

From TikTok and Instagram reels to making their way into the school, some of the biggest memes of 2025 have found their way into the halls of West Jordan High School. Plenty of memes have passed through the halls, but have you started wondering which one is the biggest so far this year? You may think it would be Low Taper Fade, but unsurprisingly, another meme has taken the crown from it. That meme is 67.

To confirm this, I asked 32 students at West Jordan High School, “What is the biggest meme of 2025?” to get their opinions on this question. 62.5% of the students didn’t have to think hard about this question, saying that they believed 67 was still the biggest meme. For the rest of the students, the answers varied. Some said that Chicken Jockey was the biggest, some said the Hoopify Vocal tear was on its come up, and one student even said that Ben Freakman was massive, but the common one from this bunch was LOOOOOW TAPER FADE, with 21.8%.

The Low Taper Fade meme, in its prime, would have been the popular answer to this question. Now that it is out of its prime, but still MASSIVE, it didn’t receive as much attention. Will we see a resurgence of the Low Taper Fade meme, or are we going to see 67 continue to assert dominance and be the big meme? Or are we going to see a new meme make its way through the halls, overpowering the two?

Would You Rather Be Broke and Sad or Happy and Rich?

By Korver DeNovellis

As part of my assignment for this month, I thought it would be funny to go around and ask a simple question. Would you rather be broke and sad or happy and rich? Now, on the surface level, this looks like a really easy question to answer. But there are many factors that play into this simple question. Being rich comes with lots of taxes and money loss, while being happy comes with a lot of good times. Being broke, you don't have much to lose, but you are sad.

I had the chance to ask many people I know this question. I asked 60 people, and 22 of them said they would rather be broke and sad. One of them is Emilio Romero, a sophomore here at West Jordan. He really went into depth with his response and even tried to persuade his friends to agree with him.

Changing Policies

By Evan Copp

As the years go on, policies and rules change; they change to reflect growing issues or new discoveries. Take, for example, the phone policy, which was changed to help deal with the rising issue of phones. To be completely frank, I don’t believe this did much; it limited certain aspects, but phones still exist in the classroom. However, other policies drastically change certain aspects of both the classroom and sports, and not for the better.

The Swim Season starts in October and goes into February, and normally it officially starts the first week of October. However, this year it was knocked back, moved back into Fall Break. This is a problem, seeing as most students are gone for this week, and it only gives swimmers two weeks to prepare for their first competitions. This is not nearly enough time to prepare, leaving most swimmers on the backhand for competitions.

This policy change has crippled swim teams in the districts, forcing coaches to try to find ways around it and for swimmers to play catch-up. But what was the reason for this change? What caused the district to create this policy? This change was supposed to help the swimmers, reduce their season, and help them focus on school work and recovery. This has backfired and increased the stress for swimmers, resulting in an embarrassing fail for the district.

More Than Tolerant: Why WJHS is a Safe Space for LGBTQ+ Students

By Dash Daniels

Being a member of the LGBTQ+ community can be a very terrifying experience. As a queer man myself, I’ve been through a level of bullying and harassment I had never been through before coming out. So that left me wondering how safe our school really is for our lgbtq peers. Though I had assumed wrongful treatment, I was pleasantly surprised.

To prioritize the comfort and security of our sources, the students quoted in this article have been granted anonymity to allow them to speak openly about their experiences.  A peer of ours states,” I feel like I've just been treated like all the other people, everyone has been very accepting, at least those that I've talked to. In all honesty, I don't think I get treated differently from other students at all”. Acceptance and tolerance are hard things for some people to learn, while here at West Jordan, we are always accepting.

Another student who was with him states, “Being at West Jordan and queer, for me, has been a mostly uneventful occasion as the spaces I am normally in are accepting and do not tolerate any phobias, and overall, compared to the students at Joel P. They are overall more accepting[…], likely because they actually have grown up. I think there was one time with a student who kept misgendering me even though they knew my pronouns, but after a teacher told them to stop it, they did. I also feel the teachers are more accepting at this school of name changes, as I have yet to meet a teacher who refuses to call me my preferred name.” This shows a very proper treatment of our peers, and I’m very proud that our teachers are so progressive. While overall the experience of being queer can be very unsafe at times, West Jordan is sure to be a safe space for all.
