The West Jordan boys basketball team tipped off their season last Wednesday facing the Alta Hawks in a game that was mainly one sided. The Jaguars struggled out of the gates being down 25-8 after the first quarter came to an end. They stepped up slightly in the second quarter scoring 13 points. The defensive struggles continued though as they allowed Alta to score 16 points.
Going into half they were losing 41-21 so they would need some resilience to make this game closer. They came out of half going back and forth with Alta trading buckets but after all the Alta came out with more. The third quarter came to a close and they were down 59-36. At this point the game was too far away to make a comeback but West Jordan still gave it their all.
The Jags controlled this fourth quarter mainly. Although they allowed Alta to score 18 they were locked in and scored 19 but it was not enough and they lost 77-55. The Jags may have lost this game but this is a step in the right direction. The next two games for West Jordan were almost the same, losing the next two 70-49 and 81-52.
The Jaguars face off next against Summit Academy on Tuesday, December 2nd at 7PM. Will the Jags continue to struggle and not be able to find wins? Or will they overcome these early season challenges and find wins in their schedule?
When I walk into the Coppers Hill gym all I see is a packed Copper Hills student section. The tensions are high for both sides as this has been the talk of the town for the past week. As the game tips off both student sections are buzzing. West Jordan hung in there, but Copper Hills held firm with a big first quarter.
The second quarter was all about bouncing back for the Jaguars. As we took momentum and the home team was shook. Senior Forward Tyler Larson was all over the place blocking shots and making hustle plays. As halftime hit the score was 23-25 and the Jags were down 2. They were in this game and just needed to come out scoring.
The third quarter was all about the Grizzlies, they came out and went on an 18-5 run. If the Jags wanted the belt they would have some serious ground to make up. After that run the defense picked up. The third quarter ended and the Jags were looking at a 18 point deficit.
The fourth quarter showed a lot of promise in this team. Even though the chances of winning were slim, the team fought hard. West Jordan went on a 13-4 run and cut the lead down to 10. Senior Guard Ahmad Mullahkhel hit a 3 pointer and was fouled. In the end though Copper Hills' big lead helped them hold onto the very end.
The next game is December 11, 2025 against American Heritage. Can the Jaguars of West Jordan find ways to win in these tough preseason games and get some momentum heading into region play?
Excitement and anticipation filled the air as the runners took to the starting line for the most important race of the year. The cross country region championships were about to begin, and this race marked the most important contest of the intense, grueling cross country season. Zac Kevan, a sophomore, said about running cross country, “our sport is your sport’s punishment,” to spotlight the large amount of running cross country requires. The runners had been working hard since June, waking up early to run during the summer months and running in the afternoon heat once school started. Boys and girls, Varsity and JV, it didn’t matter who was running; this race meant everything.
The opening race was the JV girls, and West Jordan had 2 runners in this race, who both ran some exceptional times. Next up was the JV Boys, and West Jordan had 10 runners who finished in second out of 8 schools. Following the JV Boys was the Varsity Girls, and they also performed incredibly well, with 7 runners finishing in third place against some very challenging teams. Finally, the Varsity Boys’ 7 runners, who had been focusing on a region championship all season long, were able to narrowly defeat Taylorsville, who finished second, and win the 2025 Region 4 Boys’ Cross Country Championship. This victory marks a significant milestone for West Jordan cross country, as a region championship has been the goal for several years, but has not been achieved until now. Speaking about the win, Sam Griffiths, a senior, said, “There’s no way this band of baboons is the team that won region,” highlighting the team spirit that helped lead the team to this championship.
For the varsity runners, the next race is at Divisionals, where 7 runners each for the girls and boys will aim to qualify for the state championships at the end of October. Every runner, JV and Varsity, has worked so hard this year, and Region was an excellent way to conclude the season.
Swim Team tryouts are an exciting time for new and returning swimmers alike. Tryouts can also be a very stressful time for both. It's the day that decides whether you make it to the team and
at what level you will be competing.
This year, tryouts ran like a mock swim meet. Different people of different speeds were sorted
according to their race times. Then those assorted groups raced each other at each event.
Many different events took place during tryouts. Some of the events included 50 yards of each
stroke, 100IM, 100 Free, and 200 Free. These races are what determined the team's roster and
Relays.
In the end, nobody was cut from the team. Everyone made it and was assigned to different
relays A-C. The future is looking bright for the West Jordan swim team.
As the final putt drops and gear is packed away, high school golf season comes to an end. The ups and downs they faced are now only memories from the past. For some people second place may seem underwhelming, but for the West Jordan boys golf team that is the best they could have done. The region West Jordan is in is full of amazing golfers and teams which makes this season feel successful. Even though they may have felt the success of coming second they sure made it scary. A couple of their matches hadn’t gone so well which led to them needing a reset mid season. After that reset they began to play great golf, especially for the Varsity 1, Calvin Miller.
Calvin was the only player on the team to reach the state tournament which is a great achievement. He did this by coming 3rd individually in region, and winning the region tournament, shooting a 70 and beating the competition by 2 shots. The state tournament was Monday October 6th and Tuesday the 7th. The first round was full of trials for Calvin but at the end he ended up making the cut by 1 shot, shooting a 78. The next day was almost the same round, except he dropped 1 shot and ended shooting a 77. Although he didn’t win the tournament or get too close to it he still went out and made the team and school proud.
I got the opportunity to interview Calvin after the first day. I asked him what his goals were coming into the season and if he was able to reach them. He said ,”This year I wanted to make the state tournament and I did and was fortunate enough to make the cut and play the second day.” With this being Calvin's last golf tournament I asked him 2 questions, one about his experience and his future. I asked what his favorite parts of high school golf were. He replied, “I enjoyed being able to skip school and golf. That was fun. I also liked how I was able to do that with my friends.” The concluding question was what his plans with golf were moving forward. “I want to try to play in college and see where it takes me,” Calvin answered
Into the playoffs and on to the field, the Jaguars are making it far! The Jaguar football team has made it to the playoffs, and their first game is Friday, October 31st. This football season, the Jaguars have only lost three games, winning the rest! They’ve seen the highest highs and the lowest lows, from reaching 77 points to losing by over 40. This team is united and represents the Soul of the Jaguar! This playoffs will start off by facing Bountiful’s Redhawks.
This season hasn’t only been fun for the team but for the students. Throughout this season, the student section has been off and on. In some games, the noise is non-stop, and in others, very quiet. Without a doubt, the football team needs the fans and support, which is heavily appreciated. The football team is working hard, and showing up is the best way to support them. The Jaguars hope to make it far this year!
On Friday October 17th West Jordan and Kearns had their football game here at West Jordan High. The game lasted from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and had an amazing halftime show. The start of the game had the national anthem sung with the WJ drill team presenting the flag.
They also had an awesome performance from drill, dance, and band with band kids from West Jordan Middle and Joel P. in the bleachers playing. During the halftime show the main performance was from the mini cheer where little kids from other West Jordan elementary schools.
During the game people would buy chalk so at the end of halftime they could throw it up which created a beautiful cloud of pink smoke. At the end of the game against Kearns West Jordan ended up with a 77 - 0 victory. This was a great game compared to the 63 - 0 loss against West high the week before.
