Imagine walking down the streets with huge, Greek-style architecture surrounding you in every direction. Cherry blossoms are blooming, and as you walk you feel the sprinkling of rain. You see a tall, towering monument elevated above the rest of the city, with its reflection showing in a pool below. This is Washington DC, the nation’s capital.
Some of the US history and government classes here at West Jordan alternate going between Boston and Washington DC for spring tours, and this year I was lucky enough to be able to go tour Washington DC with my History 1700 class. The teachers planned a great itinerary for the trip, including visits to the National Archives, National Museum of American History, US Capitol, Museum of African American History, Arlington National Cemetery, Ford’s Theatre, White House, and other locations. Each group also had free time after the main activities, and so we were able to experience the city’s many dining options and see the many monuments.
Various highlights of the trip included seeing the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution at the National Archives, watching the changing of the guard at the Arlington National Cemetery, going on a tour of the monuments at the National Mall, and seeing the Smithsonian Museums. That’s not to mention all of the incredible restaurants we went to that included a mix of all kinds of food, from burgers to pizza and everything in between.
My personal favorite experience of the trip was on the last day, when we had free time after a group dinner at an Italian restaurant called Carmine’s. My group decided to go see the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, and the view was incredible. The memorial is located next to the Potomac River, and just behind the river is the business district of DC and Arlington, Virginia. Immediately surrounding the memorial was a cluster of trees blooming with cherry blossoms, and we arrived just as the sun was setting. All of this combined for a perfect view, which was a perfect conclusion to the trip.
It was quite the incredible experience going to Washington DC, and I’m sure everyone else who went would agree. We were able to gain a deeper understanding of American history while having tons of fun and seeing what makes this country great.
The Way I Am is a country album by Luke Combs. This album was released late at night on March 20th. This album was hyped up by Luke and his team for around 2 months, and every fan of his was excited to hear his final product. Here are my opinions on the album.
“Back in the Saddle”- 6.5/10- I like the vibe of the song, but it just isn't my favorite song.
“My Kinda Saturday Night”- 7.3/10- I would definitely play this song really loud while driving down a dark road.
“Days Like These”- 10/10- It’s by far my favorite song on the album; I can sing it bar for bar.
“15 Minutes”- 8/10- There’s not much to the song, but it’s genuinely a good song.
“Alcohol of Fame”- 5/10- It’s not the best song he's produced, that's for sure.
“Daytona 499”- 6/10- This song would rock with a hype video for Daytona.
“The Way I Am”- 7.5/10- This song kind of just defines this album.
“Wish Upon a Whiskey”- 8.5/10- I quite like the song itself, and Luke Combs’ voice just fits it perfectly.
“Soon As I Get Home”- 4/10- The chorus isn’t the greatest, and I’m not sure if I like it or not.
“Rethink Some Things”- 4.5/10- It feels like more of a pop than a country song.
“Giving Her Away”- 7.5/10- It’s a good song. I like the musical aspect of it.
“Seeing Someone”- 9/10- I really like the lyrics behind the song.
“Sleepless in a Hotel Room”- 4/10- It’s definitely my least favorite song on the album.
“I Ain’t No Cowboy”- 5.5/10- It’s kind of just a mid-tier song.
“Ever Mine”- 9.5/10- The acoustic version is definitely better, but this one is still up there as my favorite song on the album.
“Can’t Tell Me I’m Wrong”- 6.5/10- This also feels like a pop song, but this one I kind of like.
“Miss You Here”- 6/10- It’s a pretty good song, not much to it.
“Tell ‘Em About Tonight”- 7/10- I like the lyrics of the song.
“Be By You”- 9/10- It’s my third favorite song on this album, and it’s really good.
“The Me Part of You”- 5/10- This one is definitely not my favorite on the album.
“Rich Man”- 7/10- I like the music and the lyrics of the song.
“A Man Was Born”- 8/10- It’s a great song to end the album.
The album itself was good, but not his best that he has ever released. This album does include my personal favorite song from him, “Days Like These,” so it wasn’t the worst thing in the world.
If everyone in the world was transported to a room and given a red button and a blue button and they must choose what button to press, which button would they press? If more than 50% of people pressed the blue button then everyone would survive but if more than 50% of people pressed the red button everyone who pressed the blue button would die. Which button would you press? I asked over 50 students at West Jordan High School and blue won.
This question raised a lot of interesting questions about the importance of protecting your own life and what most people would press. People who would press the blue button tended to have an optimistic view of other people and the perspective that we could get enough people to protect everyone. While those who would press the red button tended to have the perspective that it is everyone's responsibility to protect themselves.
