VPA African Drums is an audition-based ensemble open to 5th and 6th grade students. Rehearsals are held most Friday mornings before school from 7:30–8:05 AM in the music room.  Our first morning rehearsal will be held on Friday, September 4th. 

Students interested in auditioning must complete the audition process before school on Friday, August 28, 2026 at 7:30 AM in the Music Room. Drop-off will begin by the gym doors starting at 7:15 AM.  Please make sure your child is on time to auditions!

Auditioning students will be asked to demonstrate:

• Confidence playing independently and in a group setting

• Ability to keep a steady beat

• Ability to perform and echo simple rhythms

• Readiness to learn and improve

• Improvisation in a drum circle setting

Audition results will be posted on the VPA Music website by 6:00 PM on Friday, August 28. Please note that participation in the VPA African Drums ensemble is limited due to rehearsal space and instrument availability. All students will still experience African drumming as part of their classroom music rotation.

How to Prepare for Auditions

African Drum auditions are designed to be fun, low-pressure, and interactive! Students will audition in small or large groups to recreate the experience of a traditional drum circle. During the audition, students will demonstrate their ability to keep a steady beat, echo simple rhythmic patterns, and maintain an assigned rhythm while others perform different parts. No prior drumming experience is required.

How to Prepare

• Practice keeping a steady beat by clapping or tapping along with your favorite songs.

• Listen carefully and try to repeat simple rhythm patterns.

• Be ready to focus, listen to others, and work as part of an ensemble.

• Bring a positive attitude and do your best! We are looking for students who are willing to learn, stay engaged, and contribute to the group's success—not just students with previous experience.

The goal of the audition is to see each student's rhythmic potential, listening skills, and ability to perform as part of a team.
