Week of October 6-10

Bible: In the upcoming week students will continue their next unit on the early church and the book of Acts. Our next few lessons will be on the spreading of the gospel to the Judea and Samaria and the transformation of Saul.

Friendzy: Our October social/emotional/spiritual curriculum unit is "Listen Up!". This month we are teaching the students the Catchphrase LISTEN UP! In this unit we will learn about Whole Body Listening; learning to listen with our whole selves so that others feel seen, heard, and valued.  We are focusing on Deuteronomy 6:4-5:  “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” As we seek to develop our listening skills, we anchor it in Proverbs 2:2:  “Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding.”

Math

Targets:

This week in math we will continue working on Chapter 4: Graphing Linear Equations. Students will learn slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and standard form of equations and learn how to graph each one. We will continue working with tables to graph as well as understand how to graph slopes when they are positive and negative, always working left to right.

Algebra

Targets: 

This week we will begin unit 3: Functions and function notation. Students will learn what functions should look like in tables and on graphs. We will learn about the "vertical line test" and how this can help us decipher between functions, as well as how "inputs" and "outputs" are affected. Students will learn and become familiar with Domain and Range.

Language Arts 

Targets: 

This week we will continue with our unit on The Giver by Lowry. Lowry slowly reveals information to the reader, so we are making inferences about the community and its characteristics as we read. More specifically, we will learn more about Jonas's Capacity to See Beyond and how his new understandings and awareness affect him.

• Mid-unit test on The Giver on Wednesday. Students can use the review guide to prepare for the test.

Science: In the upcoming week students will finish their lab unit on matter particles. We'll be creating operational definitions and word statements for the chemical reactions created in class. We'll use these definitions to compare substances particles. 

Homework: Green Sheet Learning Targets (ALL) - Due Friday, October 10

Assessments: None

Social Studies: We will discuss the Boston Tea Party, and how it directly led to events that began the American Revolution.  We will also explore Lexington and Concord.

Assignments: None unless work is not finished in class.
