Academic Language Development Teachers
Argument and Debate (9th grade):
Argument and Debate prepares students for a successful academic experience in high school, particularly by developing skills needed to participate in an English classroom. This includes students strengthening their reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, speaking, and listening skills. Additionally, students will review reading, note-taking, and discussion strategies that they can apply to any classroom that will make them more confident learners.
Advanced Argument (10th grade):
Advanced Argument continues refining the use of academic language both written and oral and developing skills needed to participate in an English classroom. Students practice reading, note-taking, and discussion strategies more in depth so that they can apply to any classroom that will make them more confident learners.
Controversial Issues in American Society:
From Affirmative Action to physician-assisted suicide, abortion to mandatory military service, “Controversial Issues in American Society” will engage students in the study, discussion and debate of contentious topics in the United States today. In grappling with these moral questions, students will dig in to the research on these issues, apply concepts of political philosophy, evaluate conflicting source material and arguments and attempt to answer the question, “what is the right this to do?” The goal of this class is for students to practice reading, note-taking, and discussion strategies and refine their use of academic language.
