Day 1, Ch. 1-3 Lesson Overview and Objectives

After describing their own personal utopias in a quick-write, students begin learning about the world in which The Giver takes place. After reading, students answer reading questions about these chapters.

Lesson Plan

  1. Post instructions and links in Google Classroom.
  2. Quick-write: Utopia (n) an imagined community or society that possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities for its citizens. If you could create your own utopia, what would it look like? (4-5 sentences) Either project the prompt and have students answer in notebooks, or post "utopia quick-write" Google Doc in Google Classroom for students to access. Ask students to share what they have written with a partner and ask some students to share with the class. (15-20 minutes)
  3. Begin playing the audio for Ch. 1-3, found here (total of 40 minutes) *Because reading for 40 minutes is a lot for some students, I recommend taking a break for a few minutes between chapters. During these breaks, you can ask students to come up with questions and inferences about what has just been read, or allow them to begin working on the reading comprehension questions that go with these chapters.
  4. Have students login to Google Classroom to access and begin answering reading questions for chapters 1-3.

Optional: Have students practice vocabulary from Chapters 1-3 with this Quizlet Study Set
