We use sketchbooks the first 10 minutes of classes to give students extra time to settle in and warm up.
I adapted an idea from a peer about using HP or health points in a classroom (Jones 2018). It was used to reward good behaviors like proper set up, productive work time, good clean up, respecting each other in the share square. These actions “healed” the class and additional hearts were drawn. When groups would reach a certain number of hearts in a week, a reward would be offered like outdoor sketch time, an educational game, or choice time with preferred materials.
